The job duties of an Electrical Foreman entail:

Responsibilities Include:


  • Coordinating and scheduling their team

  • Ensuring quality work

  • Troubleshooting and repair when needed

  • Diagnose electrical faults

  • Provide excellent customer service

  • Able to read blueprints

  • Make decisions under pressure

  • Knowledge of their craft and the ability to transfer this knowledge and skill to electricians

  • In some cases, they may have a role in hiring and termination decisions 

Administrative duties such as inventory and budgeting are part of the job. Other common Electrical Foreman duties include the following.

Team Leadership

The Electrical Foreman will oversee a team of electricians as they maintain a large electrical system and ensure the proper schedule is kept. The foreman must be effective at motivating their team, as well as giving a frank but constructive assessment of the work done.


  • People person with strong desire and ability to train other electricians.

  • Updating project records and preparing relevant documents and reports.

  • Advising management on continued use of unsuitable equipment, appliances, and apparatus.

  • Supervising electricians.

  • Responsible for the coordination and prioritization of maintenance activities to maximize production efficiencies.

  • Assist the Maintenance Foreman, Production General Foreman, and Department Manager in preparing capital appropriations and carrying out projects within specified budgets. Will also assist in developing routine and non-routine maintenance budgets.

Schematic Design and Improvement

Electrical Foremen are tasked with keeping their system up to date. In addition to maintenance, this entails contributing improved designs and manufacturing processes to corporate. This will generally involve schematics and cost estimates.


  • Installing, repairing, and servicing electrical systems.

  • Sourcing or fabricating replacement electrical components.

  • Interpreting blueprints and drawing rough sketches when required.

  • Drawing up preventative maintenance measures and explaining these to clients and other electricians.

  • Assembling, evaluating, testing, and maintaining electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, and apparatus.

  • Constructing and fabricating parts, using hand tools and specifications.

  • Preparing, reading and interpreting electrical and electronic circuit blueprints, diagrams, and schematics.

Payroll and Scheduling

Electrical Foremen are in charge of their division’s staffing and payroll decisions. They are responsible for deciding how many workers are needed on each shift, and how best to use each employee. In addition, they keep track of payroll and make sure that the electrical budget is kept within corporate mandates.


  • Responsible for following and upholding all aspects of the RPM Program (maintenance program) for all assigned areas, including but not limited to work order submissions/approval/routing, scheduling, preventative maintenance tasks/routines, down day coordination activities, daily/weekly/monthly meeting schedules, crew utilization, and part requisition form review/routing.

  • Must be available for weekend shifts, as needed for projects and/or daily work schedules.

Installation, Troubleshooting and Repair

The Electrical Supervisor needs to be a skilled hands-on electrician. They will generally have extensive experience in the field. They must be able to perform emergency repairs on their own, as well as take charge of troubleshooting their employees’ work.


  • Testing and troubleshooting systems to determine cause of machine error or upset condition.

  • Providing assistance during emergencies or electrical/mechanical failures.

  • Troubleshooting and repairing malfunctioning equipment, appliances, and apparatus.

  • Familiar with Lean or Lean Six Sigma.

  • Ability to work with Allen Bradley PLCs, knowledgeable in reading machine code or lateral logic a plus.

Inventory and Purchasing

Electrical Supervisors must ensure that their company is stocked with any necessary supplies for emergency repairs. Within the provided budget, they are responsible for purchasing the needed supplies. This entails negotiating with vendors and making purchases based on the highest priority and best value.


  • Obtaining required permits, equipment, tools, and materials for projects.

  • Ordering of electrical supplies and equipment.
