Description

SAIC is seeking a Flight Software Engineer on the OMES II contract in support of the On-orbit Servicing Assembly and Manufacturing (OSAM-1) program with NASA’s Exploration and In-Space Services Projects (NExIS) division.  This position is located at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, MD.

OSAM-1 is a robotic servicing mission designed to refuel a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite. It contains 3 elements: the Flight Element comprised of the OSAM-1 Servicing Vehicle (RSV) and development testbeds, the Ground Element comprised of the systems required to conduct RSV operations and the supporting networks and facilities, and the Launch Element comprised of the Launch Vehicle and supporting facilities and services. NExIS is responsible for the design, engineering, development, test, and operations of the OSAM-1 Mission through an integrated team at GSFC. The Servicing Payload design, development and RSV integration will be conducted at GSFC.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The flight software engineer will support the development, testing, and maintenance of critical C/C++ flight software with the Hybrid Flight Computing System (HFCS) team.

Job duties include:


  • Support a wide array of design, development, integration, and testing activities associated with both embedded flight and ground support systems.


  • Support development activities including:


    • Writing well-tested, well-documented, critical flight code.


    • Developing drivers for a real-time operating system to support Field Programmable Gate Array 

      (FPGA) hardware acceleration.






    • Developing or using ground tools to support testing and integration.


    • Understanding complex algorithms from a mathematical, software, and hardware perspective.






Qualifications


REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:



  • Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Science Engineering degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or equivalent degree/experience.


  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience is highly desired, but all candidates will be considered

     based upon qualifications.


  • Strong fluency in C.


  • Understanding of C++.


  • Understanding of embedded systems and computer architecture.


  • Ability to develop, test, and maintain flight software using the following tools including: Make, Git, and Code review.


  • Ability to write clear, well-tested, well-documented, standards-compliant C/C++ flight code subject to and incorporating peer review recommendations.


  • Ability to effectively work in a collaborative development environment by addressing challenges with logic, through a solutions based approach.


DESIRED EXPERIENCE:


  • Scripting in Bash, Python, and/or MATLAB.


  • Strong mathematical background.


  • Basic understanding of Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)s and parallel programming.


  • Experience writing comprehensive unit tests for C/C++.


  • Experience writing documentation, including LaTeX, Markdown, and Doxygen.


  • Experience with space systems and writing flight code.


  • Experience with developing low-level drivers and working with various OS-level or firmware-level abstractions and APIs.


  • Experience with make, cmake, or other makefile-based build systems.


  • Experience with Git version control.


  • Experience with the PowerPC architecture.


  • Experience with flight software frameworks such as cFE/cFS and OSAL.


  • Experience with real time operating systems such as vxWorks, RTEMS, and FreeRTOS.


  • Knowledge of 2D/3D image/video processing algorithms.


  • Experience with algorithm optimization techniques.


  • Knowledge of spacecraft Guidance, Navigation, and Control (GN&C) algorithms.


  • Experience with NASA mission life cycle and review cycle: design reviews, requirements reviews, and trade studies.


  • Ability to learn quickly; highly motivated, self-starter with a positive attitude.


  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
