Job Description Summary

The Los Angeles Times has an opening for an assistant editor to work with the crime, courts and justice team in Metro.

The successful candidate should have a deep interest in the criminal justice system, including a familiarity with accessing law enforcement and court records, libel law and data reporting. Editing experience is a plus. The editor will work with a group of reporters covering California law enforcement agencies and courts and be responsible for breaking news, narrative features and investigative work. The editor can expect to anchor coverage of major crime news involving dozens of reporters while also hunkering down to manage complex data investigations.

There is special emphasis on helping reporters focus on police accountability, which has long been a central mission of this team, as well as exploring criminal justice reform. We are looking for an editor who is relentless about uncovering the truth and sophistication about framing stories and running ongoing coverage of highly sensitive stories.

Requirements:


  • A minimum of seven years of journalism experience

  • Ability to foster excellent communication with peers, supervisors and the newsroom

  • Ability to navigate digital platforms and stay on top of current events

  • Proven ability to work well in a team setting and juggle multiple tasks in a deadline-driven environment

  • Excellent skills in line editing, combining strong news judgment, fluency in style and deep knowledge of taste and legal considerations; understanding the importance of accuracy and precision

  • An ethical and inclusive approach in the workplace that promotes collaboration

  • Versatility and adaptability, working not just across production platforms but also across criminal justice subject areas

This position is classified as Assistant Editor in the Los Angeles Times Guild. Times staff is currently working remotely, but when we return to the newsroom the position will be based in El Segundo, Calif.
