We are looking for a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer for our Product Exploration Team. While other engineering product development teams at Garmin primarily focus on designing products, our team focuses on the product-enabling technologies that will be essential to those products and will expedite their development. These feeder technologies are to ensure superior products. In this role, you will explore new-to-Garmin technologies and develop them into superior mechanical solutions to be ready for business segments to adopt. Responsibilities include technology investigations, design, testing/validation, prototyping, and supporting technology transfer to product development teams. Other essential functions include:
Explore innovative mechanical concepts
Review CAD assemblies for technical feasibility and apply first hand experience to risky items
Complete complex mechanical designs
Applies extensive technical expertise and analysis to all assigned projects
Ability to customize existing, or develop new test methods to substantiate otherwise unverified aspects of product designs including material behavior at extreme conditions
Good knowledge of injection molding, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining, etc.
Good knowledge of GD&T and tolerance analysis
Advanced testing capability and knowledge of materials and their behaviors at extreme conditions
Specify test plans to validate very complex systems with complex performance requirements
Excellent tradeoff management skills and ability to mitigate risk
Ability to make estimates on complex and risky Mechanical designs including: tooling, part cost, and design time
Negotiate processes, materials, and design feasibility with factory and vendors
Knowledgeable of Industry and Garmin product qualification tests (environmental and others)
Makes substantial contributions toward determination of project goal/objective feasibility
Mentor level 1, 2, and Senior engineers on all aspects of mechanical design
Provides technical input to product development plans and concept documents
Provides reliable solutions to a wide range of difficult problems using sound problem solving techniques
Offers process improvement suggestions and authors new procedures as required
Exemplifies Garmin’s Mission Statement and Quality Policy and proactively works to improve Garmin’s image and culture
Defines general approaches as well as specific solutions to technical problems considered state of the art
Applies knowledge of production and operations issues as they relate to engineering
Leads explorations of new technologies
Associates are expected to integrate, use, and provide feedback on products in development when possible as part of their normal job responsibilities.

Overseas travel as required
Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of 5 years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience. Other qualifications include:
Excellent academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)
Master CAD-user able to complete the most difficult tasks
Experience in a skunk-works, fast-paced design environment
Demonstrated knowledge and capability to use CAD software for completing complex mechanical designs (Solidworks preferred)
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
