We are looking for a full-time experienced Mechanical Designer / Product Designer 2 for our Consumer Products Team located at Garmin's HQ in the Kansas City area. In this role, you will develop moderately complex mechanical solutions, test and validate, complete technology explorations and/or deliver to mass production.
Our Mechanical Engineers have a range of opportunities for collaboration when designing and testing new products. We have built the Xero bow sight, Force Trolling Motor, tools to track and train dogs, handheld devices that can summon EMS anywhere in the world, rugged adventure watches, trolling motors, fish finders, lots of wearables, noise cancellation headphones ...and so much more. If you want to design cutting edge consumer electronics, Garmin is the place to be! Other essential functions include:
Expert CAD user able to model complex parts
Collaborate and add value through participation in design reviews, providing comments and suggestions on mechanical engineering designs
Mockup and test basic mechanical systems to verify compliance with design requirements
Interface with Electrical Engineers, Industrial Designers, and Process Engineers to negotiate basic tradeoffs between manufacturing, appearance, and performance
Make estimates on tooling, part cost and design time for basic mechanical designs
Communicate effectively with vendors that produce custom mechanical parts as required
Specify test plans to validate moderately complex systems
Possess knowledge of injection modling, die casting, sheet metal stamping, machining processes, etc.
Provide reliable solutions to a variety of problems using creativity and sound problem solving techniques
Serve as a mentor to less experienced Mechanical Engineers (Mechanical Engineer 1)
Qualified candidates must possess a Bachelor of Science Degree OR Master of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering or Aerospace Engineering from a four year college or university AND one year relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Other qualifications include:
Product design using 3D modeling tools (prefer SolidWorks)
Demonstrates proficient knowledge and utilization of engineering tools necessary for successful performance of the essential functions of this job description
Demonstrated strong and effective verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
