Global Wealth & Asset Management (GWAM) is a key growth segment for Manulife. We operate three different channels (Retail, Retirement and Institutional) and are a major player in North America, Asia, and Europe.

Our Retirement business contributes approximately 60% of GWAM earnings and is well positioned in all our key markets. Our US Retirement business, which operates under John Hancock Retirement Plan Services (RPS), is one of the most trusted names in the rapidly evolving US group retirement industry. Over 57,000 plan sponsors and 2.8 million participants, representing over USD 200bn in Assets under Management and Administration, rely on John Hancock RPS for their retirement planning needs.

Reporting to the Head of Finance & Strategy, Global Retirement, the Head of Finance, US Retirement, is a trusted strategic and financial advisor to the US Retirement CEO and Leadership Team. This includes the development and achievement of annual and long-term business goals and objectives, and the development and adoption of key financial and non-financial performance indicators to inform operational and strategic decision-making. The Head of Finance, US Retirement, is also an important catalyst for driving business transformation, and as a senior member of the GWAM Finance community, the role contributes to overall strategy, growth, and transformation of our global franchise.

Key Accountabilities

We're looking for a leader who demonstrates a focus on exceptional change, and measurable results. A collaborative, transparent leader who can communicate a vision and engage individuals to work towards objectives. This role requires a highly visible leader who can collaborate across the company, leveraging relationships and expertise to build trust, credibility, and successful partnerships within the Senior Leadership Team of peers.


  • Oversee the preparation and delivery of US Retirement financial statements, financial and new business plans and forecasts.

  • Ensure alignment of financial plan with enterprise strategic goals.

  • Establish US Retirement business targets and drive accountability from the US Retirement Leadership Team and functional partners.

  • Ensure the sound management of expenses, in particular the achievement of expense efficiency ratios and strategic cost management objectives.

  • Act as financial lead on key strategic and business initiatives, including select enterprise initiatives such as M&A and large-scale transformation and change efforts.

  • Identify opportunities for alignment and leverage within Global Retirement and GWAM to accelerate growth and / or realize cost efficiencies.

  • Ensure effective information flow/updates between US Retirement, GWAM US, Global Retirement and Manulife's US Segment on critical business and financial initiatives.

  • Provide oversight for financial and actuarial controls and processes across the US Retirement organization.

  • Manage multiple bases for legal entity reporting, including IFRS, US Statutory and Bermuda Statutory accounting.

  • Integrate external benchmarks into strategic/financial planning process to ensure the US Retirement business remains competitive and industry leading.

  • Build, lead and develop a high-performing team to drive engagement and embed change across the organization.

First year success factors

Within the first 12 months, you could expect to have accomplished the following:


  • Establish and operationalize the framework for our strategy refresh.

  • Identify yourself as a strategic advisor to the broader executive and global leadership team.

  • Successfully act on new operational efficiencies for the business.

Qualifications

Candidates are expected to minimally reflect the following in their professional qualifications:


  • 15+ years of relevant and progressively more senior work experience in the wealth and asset management industry.

  • FSA, FCIA, CPA or similar actuarial or financial accounting designation; CFA, MBA and similar designations considered an asset.

  • Proven ability to lead and inspire people, articulate a clear and compelling vision, and drive results.

  • Ability to handle ambiguity and to influence and execute complex assignments in a matrix environment.

  • Ability to connect the dots and rapidly identify and surface the relevant patterns and issues.

  • Result-oriented with an ability to multi-task, prioritize across multiple initiatives, drive accountability, and develop solutions where blueprints may not exist.

  • Outstanding communication skills with proven ability to articulate complex business problems and technical concepts in simple and impactful words.

  • Ability to develop a clear position / point of view on key questions and issues impacting the business.
