Amsted Rail has an immediate opening for a Safety Engineer at its operation in Granite City, Illinois.

This position is responsible for overseeing and enforcing all safety measures for the manufacturing facility to include inspection of work areas, products, and employee work habits to ensure compliance with OHSA rules and safety guidelines and makes changes to improve the safety of the workplace as necessary.

• Develop procedures and designs to reduce the risk of illness, injury, or damage, identifying root causes and recommendations of policies and procedures


• Inspect the plant and take action to eliminate hazards


• Conduct accident investigations and prepare reports in response to workers compensation claims and reported injuries


• Conduct formal training programs


• Maintain hazardous communication program, including Safety Data Sheet programming (SDS)


• Organize the safety program to meet or exceed applicable regulations, prevent injuries and minimize workers compensation costs


• Maintain Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) records and analyze injury statistics to provide guidance and emphasis on programs for the plant


• Develop hazard control processes, methods and programs


• Maintain lockout/tag out procedures for all equipment


• Provide guidance to supervision/management of applicable policy changes


• Work with department supervisor to mitigate hazards through proactive daily safety audits


• Work with regulatory agencies during visits and notice of violations/complaints


• Provide guidance on Industrial Hygiene (IH) monitoring and corrective actions


• Lead safety committee to ensure employee involvement


• Perform and develop Job Safety Analysis (JSA) for applicable tasks or new tasks


• Monitor and track safety trainings by using applicable software programs

• Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety or related field


• 1-3 years of experience in an industrial environment


• 1-3 years of safety experience


• Knowledge of OSHA standards as well as local and state requirements


• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills


• Ability to work with limited supervision and able to work collaboratively with others and accomplish objectives
