Posted in Other 30+ days ago.

Type: Full-Time
Location: Washington, Washington DC

Job Description:

Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.

Nature’s news team seeks a science reporter for a July-December internship – a paid, full-time writing position based in our Washington DC office. Our interns are treated like staff reporters. They cover a beat, as well as activities at US science agencies, they travel locally for stories as appropriate and they write for both the website and print magazine. Initially, interns will be assigned stories, but ideally, will eventually pitch their own stories.

Although they primarily cover news, they could have the opportunity to write features. Top candidates will have a strong background in both science and journalism, and should demonstrate a desire to cover the process of science for an audience of researchers, administrators and decision makers. Past interns have gone on to staff positions at Carbon Brief, Chemical & Engineering News, Gizmodo, Nature, and Science News. News interns will receive an hourly wage of $19.00.

Requirements:

  • Has a university degree in a relevant subject.

  • Background in science preferred, but not required (though applicants who have published science journalism articles previously or completed a science writing/journalism programme will be weighted more heavily).

  • Capable of working in a deadline-driven environment.

  • Contributes to an inclusive, collegial work environment.

To apply, please submit a cover letter, resume and 3-5 samples of published journalism that you have written (please upload them separately from your other materials, as PDFs, and include full text). Samples should include journalism clips – please do not send scientific papers. Applicants must have an existing right to live and work in the United States.

Applications are due by February 21st. Early applications are encouraged.
