About the Role

The Sr. Director, Concept & Color is responsible for shaping, developing, and implementing the creative direction of Athleta's world class beautiful, technical and sustainable performance apparel. This role straddles the strategic and creative worlds by bringing the future to the creative teams with intense collaboration across functions of Design, R&D and AFI.

This position sets the semester creative vision annually, through physical, visual and digital presentations, driving innovation, trend, and concept through the unique brand voice of Athleta. As part of this work, you will create the continuous color, concept and surface/print impressions of the brand, in color palettes and artworks unique to Athleta's brand handwriting and aspirational to our customer.

This position will lead a team of concept, color + print designers and colour developers - and will be a critical part of the design leadership team.

This position will work closely with the design leadership team, the Head of Design, the Head of Product and key Marketing leads.

What You'll Do

  • Build an overarching approach to brand design concept and color strategy and evangelize this approach throughout the organization in various settings, partnering with key senior leaders to create alignment, attain resources and set prioritization

  • Visualize, determine, and lead strategic direction of business; accountable for process improvement, growing business and seeking opportunities to positively affect and elevate the brand

  • Work upfront with AFI and Marketing teams to create compelling concepts and narratives that translate to product stories and inform product creation

  • Ensure product stories and concepts are consistent with macro social and market trends , customer insights as well as business strategy; set the tone regarding style , silhouette and fit of product and providing recommendations based on market demands and brand image.

  • Fully responsible for providing creative direction and managing staff in all aspects of concept process

  • Influences and guides selection of fabric and trim including LLT jacquard, seamless artworks

  • Collaboratively set the seasonal inspiration travel and activities for the Concept and Design orgs

  • Define tailored program management and creative processes for project initiation, concept and color development and approval

  • Effectively delegate work while monitoring team bandwidth, finding synergies where possible and collaborating and inspiring teamwork

  • Oversee development, training and mentoring of team

  • Manage budgets of Freelancers, contractors and various trend or print vendors

  • Be a key champion of the Athleta design team, vision and aesthetic in Inc sister brand QTRLY concept workshops

Who You Are

  • 15+ years of experience as management lead, including people management, and design experience

  • Executive poise and strong ability to communicate and obtain executive buy-in

  • Strong analytical, strategic thinking and communication skills - have the ability to synthesize, develop and present clear and concise recommendations

  • Highly creative and influential, able to set overall creative tone and lead creative design, surface and color process

  • Experience in analytical and strategic brand positioning work, including design filters and customer profiling

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, managing, developing and motivating large teams of talented and diverse professionals

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, being able to juggle multiple seasons at one time

  • Strong sense of style/outfitting color with a considered aesthetic and eye toward detail

  • Strong knowledge of fabric & apparel dyeing methods

  • Confident presentation skills, capable of influencing an audience

  • Well-crafted communication and organizational skills; strong detail orientation, project management and prioritization skills

  • Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop + InDesign, Microsoft applications, and other CAD/Textile Design software; 3D software knowledge an advantage

  • Willing and able to travel domestically and internationally as needed
