About the Department



The Division of the Biological Sciences (BSD) is the largest operating unit of the University of Chicago. It includes the Pritzker School of Medicine, approximately 20 academic units, degree-granting committees, and research centers and institutes. BSD is located on the University's main campus in Hyde Park, ten minutes south of downtown Chicago. BSD's patient care operations are conducted primarily at the University of Chicago Hospital and clinics, which share the same campus.



Job Summary



The job leads and provides expertise to the development of programs for scientific research facilities. Uses considerable on-the-job experience to ensure compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies. Works independently to write articles, reports and manuscripts, and presents research findings at meetings and/or conferences. We seek a Proteomics Platform Director to build and oversee the Proteomics Core Facility at the University of Chicago. This new platform will aim to accelerate fundamental and translational research across the biological, physical and applied sciences. The Proteomics Core Facility joins additional investments in technology development on campus and is housed immediately adjacent to the DFI and Cancer Center Metabolomics Core facilities. Candidates should have a strong background in operation of diverse mass spectrometry platforms, in-line and off-line chromatography systems, proteomics and bioinformatics data analysis software, diverse proteomics experimental design strategies, as well as excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Candidates with experience working in industry settings are also encouraged to apply. This individual will report to the Faculty Director and Associate Dean for Research Resources, and will have a key leadership role in establishing and developing the Proteomics Platform at the University of Chicago. The individual will interact with other technology Platform Directors and University of Chicago core facility directors, with the Office of Shared Research Facilities (OSRF), with faculty and trainees, and with staff from the Polsky Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. The candidate will also be expected to train and manage B.S. or M.S.-level personnel that are involved in running the day-to-day operations of the Platform. The successful candidate will collaborate with investigators on experimental design, development and validation of quantitative proteomic and measurements as needed, and manage all aspects of the Proteomics Platform operation. This high-level staff scientist position would be ideally suited for someone who wishes to remain in academic research in a non-tenure track position and remain closely connected with cutting edge technology development and translational science.



Responsibilities



  • Oversees all aspects of the scientific and intellectual development, management, training, and operations for the Proteomics Platform, in collaboration with the Faculty Director and Associate Dean for Research Resources.

  • Provide scientific expertise and leadership in performing and delivering LC-MS/MS and other mass spectrometry analyses to generate quantitative global and targeted proteomics data for a variety of research projects in collaboration with investigators.

  • Participates in scientific discussions and brainstorming regarding experimental design, and new technological development and innovation around various research themes requiring proteomic methods, thereby ensuring the Proteomics Platform remains at the leading edge to support scientific discovery.

  • Interact and collaborate with other Platform Directors, OSRF Director and OSRF core Directors, Polsky Center Staff, Faculty and trainees.

  • Remains an active member of the scientific community by writing scientific articles, manuscripts, and reports for the research platform, as well as presenting research findings at scientific meetings and/or conferences.

  • Provides expertise to researchers on compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates.

  • Provides expertise to researchers and research support staff. Oversees activities related to data collection and analysis.

  • Leads the establishment of new laboratories and provides assistance with purchasing new laboratory equipment; ensuring efficient operation of laboratory, including overseeing maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.

  • Improves financial, personnel, planning, compliance and other administrative aspects of research project. Collaborates with other researchers on long-range plans for research projects. Leads, investigates, modifies and applies new procedures, techniques.

  • Provides expertise to researchers on compliance of research activities with institutional, state, and federal regulatory policies, procedures, directives and mandates.

  • Provides expertise to researchers and research support staff. Oversees activities related to data collection and analysis.

  • Leads the establishment of new laboratories and provides assistance with purchasing new laboratory equipment; ensuring efficient operation of laboratory, including overseeing maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment.

  • Improves financial, personnel, planning, compliance and other administrative aspects of research project. Collaborates with other researchers on long-range plans for research projects. Leads, investigates, modifies and applies new procedures, techniques or applications of technology. Establishes goals and operating procedures, practices, and guidelines.

  • Performs other related work as needed.




Minimum Qualifications




Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
