Engineering Regulatory Lead:

The Engineering Regulatory Lead will plan, develop, and implement BrightDrops's technical compliance capabilities in accordance with local, national, and international requirements. The Engineering Regulatory Lead will ensure that BrightDrop will comply with industry specifications, standards, regulations, and laws. He/She will review operational practices, create and implement compliance plans, and perform regulatory risk management assessments.

As the Engineering Regulatory Lead, you will be involved in all aspects of the product development process, from the initial prototyping to customer launch and acceptance. You will advise and support cross-functional teams including Engineering, Marketing, Purchasing, Quality Logistics and Legal. You will ensure regulatory compliance in multidisciplinary areas such as electrical, electronics, mechanical,materials, safety, packaging, transportation, documentation and labeling. This position requires a deep understanding of the regulatory landscape, with the ability to research and provide guidance for different countries. The role will be based in Palo Alto, CA. Travel up to 10% per year.


  • Understand full regulatory requirements for USA, Canada, Europe, and other regions as required.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure compliance to regulatory requirements, including UL, CSA, FCC, CEC and ISO.

  • Be knowledgeable with standards and certifications such as B56.12 2022- edition, UL583 (electric powered industrial trucks), battery testing per UL2271, UN/DOT 38.3 and others.

  • Track certifications through relevant compliance bodies such as FCC, CE, UL, TUV (future).

  • Comply with applicable Safety & EMC standards (including IEC/EN 61010, IEC 62368, IEEE1725, IEC/EN 61326-1 for future market expansion).

  • Understand RoHS, RED, REACH and Conflict Minerals (future European expansion).

  • Understand Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulation (WEEE).

  • Adhere to international import requirements such as China CCC mark.

  • Establish and maintain best design practices to mitigate compliance issues early in design phase.

  • Work with 3rd party labs to test and validate products for regulatory compliance.

  • Stay up to date on any changes to global agency approvals and testing procedures. Maintain a deep understanding of new and existing regulations that may impact BrightDrop products.

  • Act as liaison between BrightDrop and State, Local, Federal, and International Agencies.

  • Establish and maintain system for tracking changes in documents submitted to agencies and third-party labs. Review changes to existing products and update the requirements for regulatory submissions.

  • Review labeling and labels for compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Provide regulatory reviews of customer complaints and define the regulatory reportability.

  • Explain regulations, procedures, and policies to employees and stakeholders as necessary.

  • Maintain data and files for future reference and comply with regulatory agency audits.

  • Review marketing, legal, and technical documentation to assess compliance.

  • Implement internal and supplier audits of products and protocols. Identify areas of weakness and put in place corrective measures.

  • Provide regular status on compliance to both internal and external parties.

  • Determine budgets for regulatory compliance related items during project startup.

  • Participate in design reviews and provide direction to development teams on product regulatory compliance.

  • Prepare applications, associated documents and coordinate regulatory certifications for new products intended for a global market.

  • Manage and control documentation related to regulatory certifications.

  • Monitor regulatory and compliance changes which affect the business and communicate to the appropriate internal stakeholders.

  • Train staff on Regulatory and Compliance topics were needed.

  • Maintain current knowledge of state, national, and international regulation, guidance, and standards applicable to company products.

  • Communicate timelines and progress with both internal and external stakeholders

Additional Job Description


  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, or related technical discipline.

  • 3+ years of experience in regulatory compliance, preferably in electronics.

  • Experience with BMS, EMC, RF, and Safety certification/testing.

  • Self-starter, positive attitude, detail oriented, organized and responsible.

  • Experience in documenting regulatory requirements extracted from compliance standards.

  • Knowledge of US and International quality and regulations standards.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (technical reports to executive summaries).

  • Experience coordinating compliance testing with certification agencies.

  • Demonstrated experience working closely with testing laboratories, submitting products for global approvals, and following through to obtain certifications.
