COVID Vaccination Requirement
Consistent with long-standing practices requiring health care workers to be vaccinated against serious infectious diseases for the safety of patients and staff, Centra will require COVID-10 vaccinations for all new and current employees and those who work in Centra facilities as a condition of their employment. Specialist Clinical Nurse - Lynchburg General Hospital Professional Clinical Practice
The CNS (clinical nurse specialist) is an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse regulated under the Board of Nursing. CNS's are credentialed to practice in specific Centra facilities by Centra's medical staff office. CNS's are authorized to provide advanced services in accordance with their medical credentialing which is guided by documentation outlining their specialized training from a graduate program in nursing, either at a master's or doctoral level. CNS's are required to maintain certification in their specialty and are registered as CNS's by the Board of Nursing, separate and apart from holding a license to practice as a Registered Nurse. CNS's are uniquely prepared to collaborate with other medical and healthcare team members to manage patient conditions in a wide variety of settings which may be defined by population, setting, disease, or medical sub-specialty, type of care, or type of health problem., lead collaboration within and across healthcare settings, and serve as the bridge between disciplines. The overlapping spheres of influence affecting 1) the patient, 2) nursing practice, and 3) the broader system are key elements of the strategic approach clinical nurse specialists use to effectively manage patients with conditions and reduce costs for the healthcare system.
Masters of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited university: Includes successful completion of a master's in a clinical nurse specialist track in an accredited nursing program that includes at least 500 hours of supervised clinical practicum within their specialty area.
Preferred Doctorate in Nursing from an accredited university: If doctorate obtained for *entry to the profession it must include successful completion of a Doctor of Nursing practice in a clinical nurse specialist track from an accredited nursing program that includes at least 1000 hours of supervised clinical practicum focusing on their specialty area. *If previously qualified to practice as a CNS with a master's of science as stated in "required" above, the doctoral level of nursing practice does not have to be in a clinical nurse specialist track.
At least three years of nursing experience with an adequate volume of experience with acceptable results, reflective of the scope of privileges requested, for the past 24 months based on results of ongoing professional practice evaluation and outcomes.
New graduates: Professional references must be received from the Program Director of the graduate education program, and one reference from a peer.
Practicing clinical nurse specialist: Professional references must be received from the Supervisor at the provider's current institution, and one reference from a peer who currently works with the applicant.
Preferred at least three years of nursing experience with an adequate volume of experience with acceptable results, reflective of the scope of privileges requested, for the past 24 months based on results of ongoing professional practice evaluation and outcomes.
Current license as a registered nurse in Virginia or proof of holding a current multi-state privilege/compact registered nurse license in another compact state.
Current license as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Evidence of holding a current professional Clinical Nurse Specialist certification (i.e.: copy of certification from your credentialing agency).
Clinical Nurse Specialists must possess and maintain certification in their specialty which qualifies them to maintain license as a Clinical Nurse Specialist
Preferred Completion of NIH or equivalent training in protection of human subjects of research
Completion of additional specialty training that supports the CNS's practice foci such as ACLS or Chemotherapy/biotherapy training.
