The Special Education Social/Emotional Counselor provides social and emotional counseling to special education students in K-12 programs. The Special Education Social/Emotional Counselor works with other staff members in planning school programs to meet the special needs of students as indicated by special education evaluations, IEPs, psychological assessments, and behavioral evaluations. The SESEC is will help students to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties.



  • Provides preventative services and responds to the identified needs of special education students through implementation of comprehensive counseling program

  • Maintains caseload of students/families referred for additional support.

  • Help students to perceive, clarify, solve, and resolve problems of adjustment and interpersonal relationships, through small group counseling.

  • Help students to develop an awareness of personal emotions, willingness to seek help from others, learn personal responsibility, advocacy, regulate emotions, set goals, recognize and identify feelings, develop and maintain positive relationships.

  • Provides brief assessments to develop an action plan with special education students and their families.


  • Proactively develop appropriate relationships with students with special needs and their families.

  • Ability to work with special education students who are in crisis situations.

  • Able to provide guidance and assistance to school leaders regarding how to care for special education students who are experiencing a crisis.

  • Facilitates family intervention meetings with families in crisis or with multi-dimensional needs.

  • Planning and/or promoting programs which enhance the social or emotional growth of special education students.

  • Present for special education students a positive role model that supports the mission and values of Ohio Virtual Academy.

  • Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS



  • Professional Pupil Service License, specializing in school counseling

  •  Three (3) years of experience in school counseling OR

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS



  • Background working in special education

  • Experience working in a virtual environment

  • This is a home-based position. Must live in Ohio.

  • The noise level in the home office is usually moderate (computers, printers, light foot traffic, household appliances, and household distractions).

  • The noise level at meeting locations throughout the state are typically moderate and should not vary much from what is experienced in the home office.
