Position Overview

The HR Generalist will provide support and carry out responsibilities in some or all of the following functional areas:  employee relations, training, compensation, benefits, employment, recruiting, performance and HRIS administration. The incumbent will provide outstanding customer service to all internal and external customers.  

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)


  • Performs customer service functions by answering employee requests and questions, or by directing them to the applicable resource as appropriate.  This position is the primary/front-line HR representative for the area.

  • Supports the Recruiting Specialist through coordination of the onboarding process including but not limited to participation in job fairs, job descriptions, website maintenance, offer letter preparation, scheduling pre-employment testing, completing onboarding paperwork and conducting new hire orientation.  

  • Maintains Human Resource Information System (HRIS) records and compiles reports from database.

  • Makes photocopies, faxes documents, scans, tracks information and performs other clerical functions including maintaining employee files and invoicing.

  • Maintains and coordinates employee recognition program as well as performance of stay/exit interviews.

  • Maintains and coordinates the drug and alcohol testing program.

  • Provide support to the HR Manager and Director in the areas of employee relations, performance management and training.  

  • Update state and federal compliance posters as needed.

  • Coordinate and document all claims and reports relating to specific state workforce development and unemployment offices.

  • Assist with development and maintenance of policies and procedures and with disseminating this information to employees, as needed.

  • Participates in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.  Assists in evaluation of reports, decisions, and results of department in relation to established goals. Recommends new approaches, policies, and procedures to effect continual improvements in efficiency of department and services performed.

  • Maintains professional demeanor in dealing with critical/confidential information; restricts discussion/knowledge of activity to a “need to know” basis.

  • Regular and predictable attendance at assigned times is required.

  • Other duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. 

Education/Experience


  • High School diploma or general education degree (GED) required.

  • Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from an accredited college or university and at least three (3) years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience in a building materials/construction industry preferred.

  • Valid state driver’s license and satisfactory driving record is required. 

Work Requirements


  • Must be 18 years in age or older. 

  • Must pass pre-employment physical, drug screen and criminal background check. 

  • Report to the office dressed appropriately and ready to begin work at the designated start time. 

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Employee Handbook.

  • Willingness to work independently within in a team environment and assist the team with other duties as required. 

  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when necessary.

                 
 Knowledge/Skill Requirements


  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and should be able to use the internet effectively.  

  • Must possess and maintain knowledge of all pertinent federal and state regulations, filing and compliance requirements.

  • Demonstrate a hands-on, collaborative approach; work well in a team. 

  • Demonstrate comfort in communicating and partnering with senior level executives on sensitive employee issues.

  • Possess strong skills in planning and organization, as well as skills in project management. 

  • Ability to handle confidential information in a discreet, appropriate manner.

  • Ability to summarize data from different sources into a concise format that can be easily expanded and communicated to support initiatives.

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  

  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

•    Regularly required to site and use hands and fingers to manipulate/handle objects.

•    Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, talk, hear and lift and/or move up to 10 lbs.

•    Occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel or crouch, lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.

•    Able to communicate with others by telephone and in person.

•    Able to utilize office equipment including a computer for word processing, email communication, and preparation of documents and presentations.

•    May require sitting for extended periods of time.

Work Environment

•    The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

•    The environment is typical of an office setting.
