Job Description

At CoBank, our Network Architect leads the program responsible for designing and providing technical design guidance for CoBank's data and communication networks. Acts as the subject matter expert in various network types such as local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs) (including Internet circuits), and telephony networks. Responsible for ensuring CoBank's data network is designed to operate in an efficient, fast and secure manner. Identifies and designs appropriate solutions to network architectural issues Collaborates with Enterprise Security team around information and network security.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities


  • Plans and designs complex data communication networks and will create comprehensive designs with accuracy and networks that function effectively.

  • Presents network designs, plans and roadmaps to individuals with varying degrees of technical expertise.

  • Provides architectural oversight for the network implementation process, which includes determination schedules and budgets.

  • Collaborates with Enterprise Security team around information and network security.

  • Leads the development and management of documentation for CoBank's networks, including drawings, descriptions and configurations.

  • Examines networks to identify issues and develop potential solutions. Determines the appropriate hardware, software and other equipment to utilize based on the organizations' resources and needs.

  • Leads the analysis of new network technologies and market trends to stay up to date on advancements in the field.

  • Understands, advocates for and supports the enterprise's IT strategies ensuring that data and telephony network strategies map to and are relevant to the overall technology direction.

  • Leads the identification and analysis of network improvement initiatives and technologies.

  • Leads analysis of the current network environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommends solutions for improvement.

  • Participates in the creation of governing principles to guide EA decision making.

  • Oversees the implementation and installation of the network architecture and infrastructure including the evaluation and design of the architecture standards. Consults with infrastructure development project teams to fit infrastructure to architecture, as well as to identify when it is necessary to modify the technical architecture to accommodate infrastructure needs.

  • Oversees the documentation of network architecture design and analysis work. Assess and communicates the value of up to date network architecture

  • Ensures that the optimal governance structure and compliance activities (such as handling waivers) are associated with EA compliance.

  • Participates in special projects and performs other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, systems analysis or a related field of study, or equivalent experience.

  • Eight (8) or more years of relevant experience in designing and/or maintaining information networks in a complex environment.

Preferred Qualifications


  • TOGAF 9 Certification preferred.

  • Cisco Certification (e.g. CCNP, CCAr) preferred.

  • Experience leading architectural project preferred

  • Exposure to multiple, diverse technologies and processing environments, and a proven unbiased approach to the assessment of technology, vendor and product offerings and options.

  • Familiarity with basic graphical modeling approaches, tools and model repositories.

  • Advanced experience in working with a variety of technical platforms, methodologies and tools.

  • Ability to craft technology roadmaps taking broad technology concepts and applying them to technology strategy and requirements over a 3-5 year time horizon.

  • Ability to estimate the financial impact of architecture alternatives and experience with financial models and budgeting.

  • Excellent analytical, decision making and problem solving skills.

  • Strong business acumen and leadership skills, with the ability to provide high-level guidance, expertise and consultation.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and build and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management, teams, staff and internal customers across the bank.

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills, with the proven ability to effectively communicate with internal stakeholders and external partners, and influence key decisions.

  • Availability for occasional work outside normal business hours.

  • Availability for occasional travel.

Compensation Information


  • Estimated Base Salary Range: $145,000-$160,000

  • Target short-term incentive opportunity: 18%
