The primary responsibility of the Senior Medical Director is to oversee the medical aspects of clinical operations, including the quality management system for Zoetis Reference Laboratories. S/he will also liaise with the operations, consultation, and customer service teams; be responsible for laboratory-related medical decisions; and support internal and external customer messaging as relates to medical content or when intended for an audience that includes medical professionals. S/he will report directly to the Global Dx CMO and be a part of the GDx Medical Leadership Team.
RESPONSIBILITES:
MEDICAL
Oversee and support medical department heads and their teams including Clinical and Anatomic Pathology, Microbiology and Molecular Medicine Directors, as well as the Head of Quality.
Maintain constant open-ended communication with the medical team and between the medical and operations, customer service, and consulting teams
Educate the medical staff on new laboratory initiatives and significant changes in laboratory operations
Support the consultation team in providing timely and relevant support to clinicians/customers as relates to:
Inclusion of appropriate tests in clinical order sets and deletion of unnecessary tests
Interpretation of unusual, unexpected, or esoteric laboratory test results
Investigation of discrepant or unexpected results
New laboratory initiatives and significant changes in laboratory clinical operations
Oversee charting of laboratory test results in the laboratory information system to facilitate appropriate test ordering and results interpretation
With the operations and client services teams, determine if lab test turnaround times are meeting the medical needs of the customers
LABORATORY OPERATIONS
Provide technical direction and leadership to clinical laboratory staff either directly (when appropriate) or indirectly (through medical and technical subject matter experts)
Serve as a liaison between the medical leadership and the operations, consultation, and customer service teams
Be accessible to the laboratory staff to provide onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation as needed.
Develop and maintain an effective working relationship with laboratory management. Assist them in setting goals, objectives, and policies and procedures. Advise in the acquisition of capital equipment.
With the operations team, ensure the laboratory has sufficient qualified personnel with adequate documented training to meet workload demands
With the operations team, ensure that managers and supervisors have sufficient experience, expertise, and support resources to lead their sections of the clinical laboratory
Participate in the interview process for candidates for management and supervisory positions in the laboratory
Promote a safe laboratory environment for personnel and other occupants
Assist in growing pathology and laboratory business by developing new and maintaining existing clients
QUALITY
Oversee design, development, implementation, and maintenance of a comprehensive Quality Management System
Ensure that the laboratory monitors and evaluates the quality and appropriateness of services rendered within the context of the quality assurance program
Assure quality of laboratory results by reviewing quality control, proficiency surveys, & patient data on a periodic and as-needed basis
Review the quality assurance/quality management report on a regular and as-needed basis
Ensure that non-conforming events/discrepant results are thoroughly investigated and that corrective and preventive actions are documented
Periodically review patient results to determine that medically reliable data is being generated
Review all new laboratory procedures and participate in the periodic review of procedures
Establish a method evaluation protocol and review data prior to implementation of new methods and analyzers
UTILIZATION
Promote appropriate test utilization by customers through communication with clinicians, customer services, consultants, marketing materials, and customer bulletins/announcements
Advise on test menu decisions, e.g., discontinuing obsolete tests, evaluating requests for new tests, reviewing orders for esoteric tests, send-out testing facilities
Advise on use of point-of-care methods in the laboratory
Advise on and approve medical language and medical-related messaging in customer-facing materials
EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
Support continuing education for the medical laboratory staff and participate in educational programs as appropriate
Support medical laboratory scientist training programs and promote the laboratory as an optimal place of employment
Oversee the laboratory's participation in clinical research studies
Minimum 5 years diagnostic laboratory experience with experience in quality assurance, medical oversight, operations, and customer service
Experience in diagnostic laboratory leadership/management preferred
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
