Job Description Summary

The Los Angeles Times is looking for a fill-in producer to work on “The Times,” our daily news podcast that brings you the world with a West Coast perspective, and “The Envelope,” which pulls back the curtain on the top contenders during Hollywood’s award season. The fill-in producer will work on an as-needed basis with our existing team – our hosts, executive producer, senior producers, producer and audio engineer – to produce segments for our podcasts on weekends, evening shifts, on holidays and as needed. This temporary position is expected to last six months.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

• Conduct pre-interviews, book guests, prep hosts and write show scripts


• Record interviews remotely via Zoom and the iPhone Voice Memos app


• Edit interview and host tracks in ProTools


• Deliver mixed show episodes to audio engineer for mastering


• Work with audio engineer to sound design and score shows


• Conduct research for show segments


• Pitch segment ideas


• Fact-check scripts and interviews


• Able to coach and track host and fill-in hosts reading scripts


• Able to work 3 to 11 p.m. shifts Sundays through Thursdays and on holidays

Qualifications: 

• At least five years of audio journalism experience


• Experience working on a daily news show a plus


• Skilled at editing audio in ProTools


• Passionate about original audio storytelling and open to experimentation within the interview show format


• Skilled at remotely recording interviews over Zoom and with the iPhone Voice Memos app


• Detail-oriented and highly organized, with a strong desire to report the news accurately


• Comfortable giving and taking feedback as necessary


• Excited about working on a small but scrappy team that includes L.A. Times reporters, editors, other producers and audio engineers

The strongest candidates will also have a deep familiarity with everything California, the knowledge that California can explain the world (and a passion for bringing that idea to life) and the ability to speak multiple languages.
