Job Description

At CoBank, our Server Administrator/Senior Server Administrator performs server administrator responsibilities including architecture, implementation, engineering, configuration, and administration of hardware and software in CoBank's Microsoft Information Technology (IT) Infrastructure. Provides 24x7 support for the diagnosis and resolution of problems. Develops and maintains documentation and processes/procedures for operating the environment. Mentors other administrators and may lead other staff on major projects.

Essential Duties


  • Performs system administration functions in the Windows environment including configuring, tuning and building of new/existing systems and operating systems. Administers, troubleshoots, resolves problems, monitors, and conducts performance management and reporting. Responsibilities include Windows Server OS 2003/2008, hardware, Active Directory, Exchange, IIS, VMware, Citrix, patch management, capacity management, server anti-virus, FTP/DNS/DHCP, and ongoing system monitoring.

  • Assists in establishing operating methodologies and after-hours support procedures in order to support a consistent and predictable operating environment. Documents operating environment according to CoBank policies. Complies with all procedure and documentation requirements.

  • Works extensively with third party vendors in the delivery of ongoing services or major projects.

  • Prepares responses to internal and external audits and/or makes authorized changes to systems as a result of audit findings.

  • Supports the implementation and testing of Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity initiatives.

  • Provides 24x7 on-call support and availability.

  • Works within the established and documented process for change management to build, test, and implement approved changes.

  • Mentors or leads other staff to deliver major projects and ongoing predictable service.

Basic Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems or a relevant discipline.

  • Four (4) or more years of relevant experience implementing, configuring and administering Windows servers, including two (2) or more years administering Active Directory, Exchange, IIS, Citrix and working with a major network monitoring tools (e.g., Microsoft SCOM and BMC Patrol); or appropriate combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications


  • MSCE certification preferred. Experience working with UNIX and Linux.

  • Basic knowledge of banking and lending terminology preferred

  • Strong understanding of technology components, methodologies and infrastructure requirements supporting the implementation of tightly integrated information technology solutions.

  • Demonstrated experience identifying and documenting technical requirements in custom and packaged environments.

  • Proven experience with administration and design of MS Exchange Server 2007 & 2010.

  • Proven working experience with VMware.

  • Experience working with UNIX and Linux.

  • Extensive working experience with SAN/NAS technologies.

  • Advanced knowledge of networking concepts, components and protocols (e.g. router, switch, hub, TCPIP, VPN).

  • Experience working in a multi-datacenter environment and performing various disaster based recoveries.

  • Knowledge of most current developments in Microsoft server technology.

  • Knowledge of IT Service Management and Operating methodologies (e.g., ITIL).Excellent analytical, decision making and problem solving skills.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively in a team environment.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively and build and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of management, teams, staff and internal customers across the bank.

  • Excellent organizational skills and detail orientation, with demonstrated ability to prioritize and multi-task under tight time frames and with competing priorities.

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills, with the proven ability to effectively communicate with internal stakeholders and external partners, and influence key decisions.

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word and Excel), and applicable business software applications.

Compensation Information


  • Estimated Base Salary Range: $80,000-$125,000

  • Target short-term incentive opportunity: 13-15%
