Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT: Under close supervision, handles and prepares H&E staining of surgical and autopsy tissue for microscopic analysis utilizing manual or automated systems. Coverslips slides utilizing manual or automatic systems. Responsible for filing and retrieval of tissue blocks or slides. Washes and sterilizes glassware and mixes solutions. Records work in laboratory log books with a high level of accuracy. Documents daily QA/QC charts for laboratory equipment. Maintains laboratory equipment and working solutions for staining and processing. Records work in laboratory log books and in Powerpath LIS with a high level of accuracy. Edits case in PowerPath according to grossing log and prints slide label. Print recut orders and pull the requested blocks. Use bar code tracking system to assign and deliver slides. Performs all duties necessary to assist histology technicians or department staff to ensure continuity of laboratory operations. Needed skills and techniques will be developed during first six months of employment through directed work assignments and in-service training.


  • Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens, and ensures correct patient labeling of all materials.

  • Under close supervision of directed work assignments, checks surgical case number and verifies on worksheet.

  • Collects grossing sheets and edits cases by adding or deleting blocks or stain/slide requests. Records information on the grossing sheets, including the number of blocks received and organizes blocks for sectioning.

  • Routinely checks and verifies that surgical case numbers match blocks and slides and prints labels as appropriate.

  • Under close supervision, performs routine loading cassettes to processor including scanning basket for loading.

  • Under close supervision of work assignments, performs load and unload HE stainer for routine staining of slides from paraffin embedded tissue according to instructions.

  • Coverslips prepared slides manually and utilizes automated systems.

  • Log appropriate information into the surgical pathology computer system. Use PowerPath system to pull case information and run worklist and report.

  • Organizes slides for distribution according to Slides Sign-out Report worksheets.

  • Under close supervision handles lab supplies.

  • Responsible for filing, retrieval, and accurate record keeping of paraffin tissue blocks and slides.

  • Responsible for documentation of daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment.

  • Prepares and maintains working solutions for routine H&E staining on automatic strainers and processors. Prepares and maintains working solutions of routine special stains.

  • Under close supervision maintains laboratory equipment in proper working order, following appropriate laboratory safety protocols.

  • Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department.

  • Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

  • Follows all National Patient Safety Goals per The Joint Commission, as well as Laboratory and Hospital policies.

  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.

  • Performs washing of glassware and solution containers as needed

  • Mixes routine solutions for laboratory use.

  • Identifies problems and brings to the attention of a more senior staff, Senior Histology Specialist, Manager, or Technical Director.

  • Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.

  • Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalency required. A.S., B.S. or B.A. in a biological/physical science highly desired.

    • Previous experience in a laboratory setting is highly desired.

    • Computer skills required.

    • Other qualifications described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M 493.1351-1495.
