Job Description:

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT



To develop the framework for an effective staff and student education program to continually improve the knowledge and functioning of the Anesthesia Technician department. To review and update technician functions and processes to ensure the quality and compliance are exceeding internal expectations. Accountable for designing, coordinating, and implementing programs for staff development, education, research, quality and defining and implementing evidence-based practice. In collaboration with the Manager, assists with hiring and evaluating staff performance. S/he will embrace the concept of change and lead staff through the change process as evidenced by adoption of new behaviors or processes.


Ensures all policies and procedures are enforced and assists Anesthesia Technician Manager to ensure the Anesthesia Technicians is in full compliance with regulatory agencies such as the Joint Commission, Department of Public Health and ASATT and assess the quality of service and monitoring for patients undergoing Anesthesia in all anesthetizing locations throughout the hospital. Incumbent must have comprehensive knowledge of all Anesthesia Technician responsibilities. Also provides technical assistance to the Anesthesia staff in the care of patients.



EDUCATOR RESPONSIBILITIES




  • In coordination with the Anesthesia Tech Manager, develops departmental policies and procedures and ensures that all work is performed safely and in compliance with all applicable environmental and safety regulations and BWH policies.




  • Communicate and educates the staff on all new regulatory changes impacting the Anesthesia tech team.




  • Develop, review, and/or update annual Anesthesia Technicians competencies for job roles defined by manager. Answer questions and assist staff in understanding competencies. Educate new competencies as necessary.




  • Develop continuing education and training programs for all staff. Annually obtain input from staff, leads and manager. Establish yearly training calendar, schedule and subject matter.




  • Develop and maintain staff Orientation Program for experienced and/or new hires to the Anesthesia Technician department. Meet with orientees to discuss any related education issues. Maintain a standardized evaluation tool to ensure all employees are in compliance.




  • Oversee student education program. Update the program to provide exceptional training experience. Liaison with the school, meet with the students to discuss educational experiences, meet with the manager and leads on students schedule and educational plan and maintain standardized evaluation tool.




  • Liaison with local, regional and national organizations as well as regulatory agencies to establish resources for current trends and regulations.




  • In coordination with the Anesthesia Tech Manager, works closely with the OR Materials Management and Anesthesia team on new product and equipment trials. Point person on setting up all trials and in services for the Anesthesia Tech team.

  • Available to all Anesthesia Technician staff as a resource to guide, mentor, or provide information and/or education related to the department.

  • Assists in implementing new Anesthesia Tech processes to support patient and employee safety.

  • Provides leadership through mentorship in Anesthesia Tech workflow, compliance and quality programs.

  • Effectively communicate, both written and verbal, with co-workers and staff.

  • Responsible for department operations in absence of an Anesthesia Tech Manager.

  • Participates in root cause analysis and implements/supports improvement efforts.

  • Participates in and presents at hospital and department committee meetings as appropriate.

  • Other duties may be assigned to facilitate the education of staff, processes, compliance and regulatory aspects of the department.





  • OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES




  • Assists the anesthesia staff in the set up and initialization of hemodynamic monitoring equipment.




  • Assists anesthesiologists in care of patients before, during, and immediately after anesthesia which involves the following: Transfer of patients from stretchers to operating table; Attachment of vital signs and monitoring equipment; Positioning and hold patients for procedures, i.e. spinal, epidurals; Assist in endotracheal intubations by preparing and holding equipment; Assist in transfer from Operating Room to the PACU.




  • Conducts performance tests, performs calibration and first level repairs (i.e. battery changes, cable swapping, monitor checks) of anesthesia equipment.




  • Prepares blood pressure transducers. Calibrates them to the appropriate machine. Sets up IV solutions and IV infusions.




  • Sets up equipment for use in the work area such as, but not limited to, connecting input and output hoses, bronchoscopes, and assembling breathing circuits. Delivers required anesthesia equipment as needed.




  • Responsible for proper control of records and inventories. Troubleshoots and coordinates equipment repairs. Maintains knowledge of vendor product upgrades.





  • Assist the Clinical Engineering group with various projects, including machine modification and data accumulation.




  • Assumes other related duties as needed.





  • QUALIFICATIONS



    Bachelor's degree required or Associate's degree with at least 5 years of relevant experience.


    Prior experience working in an educational environment preferred.


    Preference for ASATT certified Anesthesia Technician/Technologist with well-rounded technical and operations experience.


    Prior supervisory and team building experience preferred (within an Operating Room setting is preferred).


    3-5 years Anesthesia Technician experience required.



    SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED



    Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint


    Required interpersonal skills necessary to lead, coach, and educate others and to work effectively with a wide variety of hospital and outside personnel.


    Good manual dexterity and ability to use common hand tools. Excellent visual acuity.


    Ability to think quickly and use sound judgment. High initiative, self-starter, and team-oriented focus.


    Ability to work well under extreme pressure and stress.


    Ability to remain on feet up to 80% of work time, lift and carry loads weighing up to 25 pounds, and push rolling equipment weighing several hundred pounds.


    Ability to work in a hospital environment and deal closely and effectively with a variety of professional staff (physicians and nurses) up to 100% of work time. Experience with working in OR environment 100% of work time, including knowledge of appropriate conduct in an OR and familiarity with aseptic techniques.



    PHYSICAL DEMANDS/JOB CONDITIONS



    High stress working conditions due to OR environment which may include the following: tight schedules, emergency surgery, and the critical nature of care required. Exposure to blood and secretions on contaminated equipment. Exposure to used hypodermic and spinal needles. Exposure to patients with undiagnosed disease. Exposure to narcotics and other addictive drugs.



    Qualifications
