The Research Assistant will participate in coordinating the ongoing Sinusitis Outcomes Research project. This exciting endeavor which was launched 8 year ago has already enrolled over 1000 patients who have been treated at Mass Eye and Ear for recurrent sinus infections and related disorders. The purpose of this study is to document improved quality of life in these patients following such treatments, including improved breathing and reduced headaches, Data collected from this study has already resulted in over 10 scientific publications in the medical literature.

Job responsibilities will include identifying eligible patients, recruiting them for enrollment in the study and following their progress over time to collect quality-of-life research data. These efforts will involve direct patient contact in the operating room setting, as well as working with other research team members, including fellows, in an office setting. The Research Assistant will oversee the entrance of data into the online REDCap database. They will also follow up with patients through email, phone, and U.S. mail. Some of these responsibilities may be performed at home or virtually. The Research Assistant also serves as a liaison with the Internal Review Board (IRB), compiling annual reports and ensuring ongoing IRB compliance.


  • Recruitment and enrollment of patients both in-person (in the clinic and operating room settings) and virtually.

  • Collection and organization of research consent forms, database and surveys.

  • Timely follow up with enrolled individuals via email, phone and/or U.S. mail.

  • Regular reporting of research enrollment statistics and follow-up data to research team.

  • Maintenance of IRB approval for project continuation through required annual reports.



  • Position requires a bachelor's degree, preferably in the biological or physical sciences.

  • Knowledge of relational database, graphics, spreadsheets and other software packages (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is helpful.

  • Experience working in a research setting using Epic and REDCap software is preferred.

  • Individual must possess strong quantitative, organizational and communication (verbal and written) skills.

  • Must have the ability to coordinate and prioritize multiple job tasks, to complete responsibilities within strict timelines, and to work independently, as well as part of a team.


Position involves direct patient contact. Time is split between clinic, operating room, and virtual settings.


The job involves minimal physical activity including walking and possibly standing for long periods. Employees must not be immune-suppressed since such individuals will be exposed to patients on a regular basis.
