Job Description:

We are seeking an individual interested in an interdisciplinary role as a programmer at the MGH Center for Addiction Medicine. Strong software engineering skills are required. Working independently and with minimal supervision, he or she will be responsible for fulfilling the computational and data integrity needs of the center in conjunction with the rest of the programming team. The position will at times require scheduling patients and running study visits with careful attention to IRB approved research protocols. The candidate will be expected to posess basic knowledge of and to abide by modern information security standards.

The Center for Addiction Medicine is a team composed of psychiatrists, neuroscientists, psychologists, other interdisciplianry scientists, research assistants, computer programmers, and interns. Cutting edge clinical research with human subjects seeks to contribute knowledge regarding addiction and substance use behaviors, interventions, and treatments. Though the successful candidate will posess the job title of programmer, they may be expected to perform a variety of tasks in their role at the center in addition to their computing related responsibilities.

An ideal candidate will have a willingness to learn, will act professionally, and will communicate effectively. The position requires excellent organizational skill and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks with fluctuating deadlines. It is also important that candidates posess an interest in the work of the Center for Addiction Medicine and an interest in working with human subjects on a diverse team of scientists and support staff.

Strong quantitative and computer skills are required. Candidates should be capable in Python, R, Julia, or MATLAB. Experience with software for neurimaging (Freesurfer/FSL) or psychophysics (PsychoPy/jspysch) will be taken into account, as will experience with other computer languages, data science, and/or mathematics. Basic knowledge of statistics and software engineering principles is necessary. Additional weight will be given to candidates with experience in research and a desire to continue into the field of addiction research, medicine, etc.

Specific responsibilities include:

  • Manage REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) databases, ensuring data collection integrity and compliance. (20%)

  • Prepare large datasets for analysis and prepare ad hoc reports, figures, tables and reviews on various topics for several different projects (20%)

  • Serve as technical support to research staff. Offter technical input regarding the improvement of ongoing studies and design of new studies. (15%)

  • Assist with data analysis and preparation of research data for presentations and written publications. (15%)

  • Maintain documentation for the Institutional Review Board and perform or delegate related administrative tasks. (15%)

  • Develop applications to expedite and fortify the integrity of common research-related data processing tasks (10%).

  • Monitor inventories, purchase new supplies as needed, and maintain computer systems. (5%)


Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, cognitive science, neuroscience, mathematics, biomedical engineering, bioinformatics, or related science preferred.

2-3 years of relevant experience

Standard office environment in Boston, Massachusetts. This is not a remote position and is typically a two-year assignment
