Patient Services Coord. II - Bressler Clinic Hybrid Schedule at Massachusetts General Hospital(MGH)

Job Description:

The Bressler MGPO clinic at MGH is looking to hire a Patient Services Coordinator II (PSC II). The PSC II functions as the primary interface between the patient and the clinicians, is responsible for a wide range of tasks in a high-volume setting that requires excellent customer service, organizational and interpersonal skills to ensure smooth departmental operation and delivery of services.

The responsibilities of the PSC II include, but are not limited to:

Front Desk Responsibilities:

  • Greet all patients and visitors to the clinic in a professional and timely manner.

  • Adhere to all rules of privacy with protected healthcare information.

  • Distribute incoming mail, deliveries, and faxes, and coordinate outgoing mail in a timely manner.

  • Answer the main phone line (forward calls, take messages, answer questions), check voice mailboxes and return calls daily.

  • Monitor and address all incoming Patient Gateway messages for the clinic.

  • Check in/out patients. Verify insurance information. Schedule/reschedule all follow-up appointments.

  • Provide each patient with required paperwork and obtain signatures on billing, privacy and waiver forms.

  • Oversee the collection of insurance co-payments and self-payments, responsible for daily reconciliation.

  • Schedule front desk coverage.

  • Process and track orders for all supplies.

  • Obtain medication prior authorizations as needed.

  • Perform other related tasks which would facilitate the flow of patients through the practice, or which would enhance the quality of service to patients.

  • Responsible for contents, atmosphere, and condition of reception area.

  • Work on special projects as directed.

Billing/Payor Authorization Responsibilities:

  • General understanding of all pertinent medical coverage.

  • Function as a resource for patients around managed care plans, insurance and referral issues.

  • Communicate directly with insurance companies to verify insurance eligibility.

  • Call insurers to obtain prior authorizations for patients in a timely manner.

  • Maintain records of insurance authorizations.

  • Track all patient visits and prompt clinicians when they need to fill out insurance forms to request more visits.

  • Refer patients to Patient Financial Services for financial counseling as appropriate.

  • Ensure accuracy of authorization information and resolve discrepancies.



  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

  • Good command of the English language, grammar and spelling.

  • Excellent and effective customer service and communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and courteously with various groups of patients, staff and providers.

  • Ability to prioritize workload.

  • Exceptional organizational skills, flexibility to manage multiple tasks, and attentive to details.

  • Ability to work independently or within a team environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and function as a resource to other members of the team, and resolve complex issues on behalf of the providers and the patients.


High School diploma required.

Minimum of 1-2 years secretarial experience or equivalent in a medical or health care related setting.
