Job Description:

Reports to the Cancer Center Director. The phlebotomist works as part of the healthcare team to perform phlebotomy in a high-volume, multi-provider office setting. Responsibilities encompass a variety of direct patient contact duties related to drawing blood via venipuncture or capillary stick, sending urine, sputum, and stool samples for various test procedures, and packaging specimens for transport. May assist with other diagnostic procedures and treatments consistent with her/is training and skills. His/her primary roles are to follow aseptic technique when drawing blood and ensure efficient and accurate identification of patient and specimen labeling procedures according to hospital policy.

Receives training in all facets of phlebotomy to include but not limited to adult venipuncture and capillary technique. Acquires and maintains knowledge of related topics to include, but not limited to, aseptic technique, infection control, disposal of biohazardous material, proper handling of requisitions, interpersonal skills, communications, and dealing with difficult situations.
Verifies patient name using 2 identifiers against the blood requisition. Also verbally verifies with the patient prior to beginning blood drawing procedures. Locates a vein and draws requested blood following standard phlebotomy techniques, determines need for special equipment for problem veins. Performs a finger-stick as needed. When necessary, instructs patients in the correct procedure for obtaining urine samples and provides patient with the proper collection materials.
Ensures adherence to special tests such as STATS, pre-chemotherapy, blood cultures, and fasting collections.
Identifies a wide variety of tests; selects appropriate tubes for tests according to size and metric volume; estimates quantity of blood needed in relation to tests ordered; assembles all necessary equipment; labels tubes appropriately in the presence of the patient; completes requisition by entering date, time, and initials. Prepares samples for transport and confirms if any special considerations are required for transport, ie: ice or warm water. Completes phlebotomist specific Cancer Center tracking log by attaching patient label, time, and documents number of tubes drawn. Opportunities may arise that requires the phlebotomist to draw patient labs in the exam room.
Provides coverage for all phlebotomy areas in the Cancer Center, especially during times of absence due to illness or vacations.
Responsibilities also include:
 Adheres to hand hygiene and standard precaution guidelines
 Follows patient identification protocol, maintains confidentiality, and upholds compliance standards according to policy.
 Provides culturally competent care to patients.
 Maintains neat, clean, and safe phlebotomy area.
 Assures phlebotomy area is properly stocked and rotated, and secured as applicable
 Assures all stock is within expiration date
 Assures all equipment is in good working order.
 Maintains yearly mandatory competencies which include fire/disaster safety, infection control, and practice specific competencies.
Promotes patient/customer satisfaction by interacting with patients in a professional, friendly manner, consistent with their needs.
 Adheres to Human Resource policies with respect to attendance and dress code
 Adheres to MGH customer service philosophy in all patient interactions
 Communicates appropriately and effectively with patients
Functions as an integral part of the patient care team
 Interacts in a professional, cooperative way with other practice staff
 Accepts delegate responsibilities in a positive manner
 Before leaving the lab station on breaks/lunch/meetings makes sure adequate coverage is available
 Engages in constructive problem solving with others as problems arise
 Attends and participates in staff meetings


Minimum of High School Degree
Certification in Phlebotomy

Effective interpersonal and communication skills with all staff and patients.
Accuracy and attention to detail
Ability to provide compassionate care to patients
Ability to recognize emergency situations and respond appropriately
Capable of physical exertion including; walking, standing, sitting, and bending.
Able to work under stress of time constraints and heavy workload demands requiring accuracy.
Ability to work independently.
