Job Description:

The Senior Research Assistant will coordinate all activities of two research projects in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Primary Care. One project
is a 3-year implementation study funded by PCORI (Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute). The goal of the study is to implement and evaluate an intervention that includes an online weight management program combined with support from patient navigators across a variety of practices. Some of the outcomes to be studied are weight loss over 12 months, changes in health behaviors, intervention adoption and usage, and patient and provider satisfaction. The second project is a 5-year implementation study funded by NIH (National Institutes of Health), which is currently in its fourth year. The goal of the study is the implement and evaluate an intervention that delivers point-of-care recommendations to primary care physicians about the management of high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease. Some of the outcomes to be studied are systolic blood pressure after 6 months, changes in physician orders of medications and lab tests, intervention adoption usage, and patient and provider satisfaction.

Responsibilities includce but are not limited to: supervising the daily activities of research assistants, project management, such as the development and monitoring of project plans, timelines, and progress reports; coordination of study activities across multiple practices/institutions; development of data collection tools and materials; data collection, management, and analysis; running staff meetings; overseeing/conducting chart reviews and preparation of presentations and manuscripts.

The incumbent will support the communication of the accomplishments of the team and initiatives. The incumbent will be required to work closely with investigators and staff at BWH, Mass General Brigham, and other participating institutions.

This position requires 3-5 years of directrly related, progressively more responsible, experience, excellent interpersonal skills, writing skills, problem-solving skills, strong organizational and communication skills, and the ability to think creatively about improving healthcare delivery. Understanding of health information technology and development is a plus.


  • Work with investigators to successfully develop, implement, and maintain project databases

  • Work directly with the Principal Investigators to oversee projects and train/supervise research assistants.

  • Collaborate with project Co-investigators, including those at other sites.

  • Provide oversight and management for day-to-day operations of the projects.

  • Work with the data support team to develop necessary infrastructure, manage data, and support data updates.

  • Work with data analysts to use MS Access and Excel to assist in data collection efforts, database development, and descriptive data analysis.

  • Utilize REDCap to enable data collection efforts and descriptive data analysis.

  • Develop recruitment materials and survey instruments.

  • Arrange focus groups and interviews.

  • Manage project timelines and review budgets to ensure that project goals are met on time and within budget.

  • Supervise research assistants.

  • Coordinate project plans, manage project meetings and agendas.

  • Provide project updates to project team and collaborators.

  • Manage related protocols for the Mass General Brigham institutional review board (IRB).

  • Oversee project database data management, data collection methods, and data quality.

  • Prepare presentations and materials for distribution related to the project, including MS PowerPoint slides, tables, and graphs.

  • Contribute to the preparation of research reports and manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Contribute to grant writing initiatives for future funding.

  • Write progress reports to the funding organizations.

  • Other duties, as assigned by the Principal Investigators.


  • Bachelors Degree required, Masters Degree preferred with concentration in healthcare, public health or social sciences preferred

  • 3-5 years of directrly related, progressively more responsible, experience required

  • Experience in healthcare research including supervisory/project management experience and team coordination preferred

  • Experience in conducting research across multiple organizations preferred

  • Experience with supervision/project management of electronic health record projects preferred

  • Experience with data management, including using word-processing, spreadsheet, MS Access database software, REDCap preferred

  • Experience with developing recruitment materials and survey instruments

  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus


  • 3-5 years of directrly related, progressively more responsible, experience

  • Experience in healthcare research including supervisory/project management experience and team coordination preferred

  • Excellent interpersonal skills required for working with project leadership, clinicians, and staff in a professional and respectful manner

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to complete work and meet deadlines

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Power Point, Excel; knowledge of MS Access

  • Experienced user of REDCap preferred

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to work with data

  • Ability to use medical bibliographic retrieval programs preferred-EndNote

  • Proficiency in Spanish a plus (but not required)


  • Remote, professional office and clinical setting. Some travel may be required between study sites.
