General Summary

The Population Health Management (PHM) department at Mass General Brigham aims to deliver health and healthcare for all by translating the evolving needs of the healthcare landscape into innovative solutions to better serve individuals, communities, and organizations.

The Senior Pharmacist, under the supervision of the PHM Medical Director and in collaboration with the MGB Center for Drug Policy (CPD), will support the mission of PHM by working to support a systemized approach to managing pharmacy trend in PHM risk contracts.

Duties & Responsibilities

Strategic Pharmacy Utilization

  • Develop an organized approach to monitor the development and release of new drugs and impact on risk contracts

  • Develop a range of utilization management approaches to manage pharmacy trend, including, but not limited to developing evidenced-based drug policies and guidelines, generic and biosimilar strategies, preferred drug lists, ambulatory formulary, etc.

Pharmacy Performance Management

  • Facilitate implementation of utilization management approaches in the electronic health record and dissemination of information across the system

  • Assist in the measurement of the impact of the utilization strategies on pharmacy trend, including but not limited to assessing adherence to drug guidelines via medical record reviews, comparing drug utilization across the system and with other national institutions

  • Work with payors to review pharmacy performance on risk contracts and identify opportunities for cost mitigation

  • Develop and implement other strategies to facilitate management of pharmacy expenditures

Additional Responsibilities

  • Oversee the management of the Employee Health subcommittee, including the technical and operational work as well as communication

  • Serve as a medication policy expert on system wide committees

  • May be asked to develop abstracts and manuscripts, suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journals, which support the mission of the CDP

  • May be asked to provide education and training, within the mission of the CDP, to pharmacy students, pharmacy residents, and fellows in pharmacy and drug policy

  • This position is a hybrid work model with some onsite requirement to Somerville, MA



  • Licensed pharmacist

  • Residency/fellowship/advanced degree in managed care/population health

  • Experience working with large data sets to analyze utilization and costs of pharmacy utilization, in inpatient, outpatient and retail settings

  • Experience working in dynamic, growing organizations and a proven ability to both support and add to a growing program and key corporate initiative

Desirable qualifications:

  • Board certification in pharmacotherapy

  • Familiarity with medication use evaluation methodology

  • Experience with Epic and/or other electronic health record systems

  • A combination of education and experience may be substituted for requirements
