Acts as project leader on programs, portions of programs, or special projects that are of major concern to the Engineering Department. Assists management with the planning and approval phases of the program and then assumes full responsibility for executing the project plan. Insures that product performance, reliability, durability, cost, safety goals, and manufacturing efficiencies meet the established requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Leads design and/or analysis project efforts.
Responsible for completing the overall design of the product accomplished by generating design concepts or using design concepts created by other members of the engineering project team. Design responsibilities include but are not limited to: product cost, timing, durability, safety, performance, manufacturability and quality.
Oversees the layout and detail design accomplished by members of the engineering project team, ensuring that drawing packages and other documentation are completed properly.
Responsible for the analysis, or oversees the analysis, of proposed engineering designs using calculations, testing, computer methods or other techniques as needed.
Procures and coordinates the efforts of outside consultants, labs, etc. needed to accomplish the design or other objectives of the project.
Works with Legal on potential patent activities and liability avoidance.
Applies value analysis techniques to find low cost design.
Develops products to meet appropriate agency requirements and works with those agencies to obtain approval.
Plans and executes engineering development on his/her initiative with supervisor approval.
Works with engineering manager or director of product development in developing product proposals to satisfy specific market requirements.
Helps to establish overall product specifications, features, design features, design objectives and schedules.
Conducts feasibility studies to reveal idea practicality and potential design or program issues.
Assists the Test department in developing and following test plans.
Coordinates engineering activity during the feasibility, development and implementation phases.
Works with project leader or acts as project leader when required during the concept and the production phases of a program.
Assigns specific tasks and duties to the engineering team and empowers the team as needed to accomplish department goals.
Informs and updates project team members, engineering management and directors on project status and plan as needed.
Works with Marketing, Sales, Management, Shop, Drafting, Test, Research, Manufacturing, Purchasing and Accounting as required by the project.
May supervise work activities of the engineers, designers, draftspersons, technicians, and mechanics assigned to the project. Orient, motivate, define design objectives and delegate work. Review progress, assist in problem solving.
Assist Management in training lower level employees in technical areas.
Assist the director of product development or engineering manager in advising and consulting with other engineers on design layouts, solutions to specific problems, improved function, styling or other technical matters.
Keeps abreast of new development, materials, competitive products, etc. Assist in field days, sales and service meetings.
Applies "Total Quality" principles in the daily performance of the job.
Ability to work with others in teams to accomplish goals.
Travel to test-sites, distributors, customers, vendors, manufacturing facilities and others will be required.
Directs work of assigned support personnel
Design decisions significantly affect sales, warranty, customer satisfaction; component failures may result in liability lawsuits.
Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aeronautical or Agricultural Engineering required.
Preferably in the powered equipment field. Successful completion of EIT requirements is desirable. Must be able to create and analyze portions of product design as assigned when given direction and leadership.
