Job Description:

SUMMARY: Supervises and coordinates activities in the maintenance areas for the refrigeration and boiler systems at a large pork processing facility. Maintains timely communication with plant production operations; maintains an effective preventative maintenance schedule; control mechanical inventories and ensure systems are safe and operational.



ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned at management's discretion.



  • Schedule's powerhouse and refrigeration personnel to maintain the department for optimal facility operation (24-hour coverage).

  • Prepares and supervises preventive maintenance (PM) schedules for all systems under the powerhouse and ammonia refrigeration departments.

  • Responsible for the collection and monitoring of utilities with production management and address any issues that arise which could adversely impact the operational performance of the facility.

  • Ensures that all OSHA, PSM standards are maintained in a timely and accurate manner and all systems are operated in compliance with OSHA, ASHRAE, and PSM policies and procedures.

  • Responsible for training and development of personnel, RETA certification, SOP annual certification, Mechanical Integrity, MOC/PSSR, Incident Investigations, and completing all open PHA, CA, MI, recommendations.

  • Participate in all CA's, PHA's, MI Inspections, Incident Investigations and monthly PSM Information calls. Confirm Annual Visual Inspections are done correctly, P&IDs are updated, and valves are cycled.



  • Must be familiar with OSHA and FSIS regulations and work with FSIS to receive, evaluate and report work needed to keep the plant running in accordance with government requirements

  • Assist in the planning, developing and implementation of effective preventative maintenance and crisis management programs in all production departments to minimize downtime and costs.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: Bachelor's degree from a four-year College or university preferred; Technical School certificate or degree, Previous experience with industrial ammonia refrigeration supervision.



COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedures manuals in the English language. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization. Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.


REASONING ABILITY AND MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to estimate the labor required to perform maintenance tasks, define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical, diagram, written and/or verbal form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Ability to apply mathematical applications to practical situations.



CERTIFICATES, OTHER: Preferred, but not required: Operator 1or 2 certifications; RETA certification. Boiler system experience preferred. Meet all HAZMAT requirements, must be able to pass the Pulmonary Function Test

The employee is occasionally required to sit, use hand to finger coordination; handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 40 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 65 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.



WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to cold and/or hot, wet, humid conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanic parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.



NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE: The hours and days of work are established as needed by operations and at the discretion of management and, while generally as shown below, may be changed (increased or decreased) by management as required.
