Idaho National Laboratory's (INL) Nuclear Facility Safety Engineer group is seeking forward-thinking professionals interested in exploring a technical career as a Nuclear Safety Basis Project Lead

The Project Lead will be responsible for delivery of Nuclear Safety Activities in support of assigned project responsibilities supporting advanced nuclear facility development activities for INL with a specific near term focus on advanced reactor initiatives.

Responsibilities Include:


  • Directs and coordinates performance for supporting safety basis analyses, provides technical review for all safety analyses and participate in the development of and safety basis documents that support design, construction and ultimate operation of these facilities.

  • Planning, scheduling, and tracking of assigned safety analysis tasks.

  • Prepare safety analysis reports, technical safety requirements (SARs/TSRs) that meet customer expectations (specifically, the nuclear safety rule, 10-CFR830) and in accordance with laboratory procedures.

  • Provide support to project and planning activities.

  • Work with design organizations, DOE (ID and HQ), and contributing organizations (e.g. structural analysis, criticality safety, radiation protection, etc.).

  • Provide direction for evaluation and resolution of complex engineering problems.

  • Make technical decisions based on sound engineering practices and in accordance with Laboratory policies and procedures.

  • Take active role in personal development through learning opportunities, career development, and mentoring as well as acting as a mentor to junior staff.

Minimum Requirements:


  • Must be able to acquire and maintain DOE Q Clearance. Must be a US Citizen.

  • Experience in collaborating with regulators in resolving comments and other issues that arise in the development and update of SARs/TSRs.

  • Experience in execution of Nuclear Safety Programs in a constantly evolving project environment.

Preferred Requirements:


  • Previous experience in developing SARs/TSRs and execution of the USQ Process (or similar commercial nuclear process).

  • Background in Probabilistic Risk Assessment, Radiological Consequence Assessment or Reactor Authorization and Licensing.
