Position Description


The Department of Art and Design at California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) invites applications for a Tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor (Academic Year) with the appointment starting in Fall 2022.

Department of Art and Design


The Art and Design Department at CSUDH offers three B.A. degrees in the areas of Art, Art History and Design with minors including Art History, Graphic Design, Digital Graphics, Art, Photography and Ceramics. Our world-class faculty provides support to students in and out of the classroom. We take full advantage of existing in one of the world's great art centers and the tremendous diversity that is Los Angeles.


The Department cultivates rigorous, cross-disciplinary programs that prepare students for professional and post-graduate work. Our Art History students EXPLORE and learn critical thinking skills and visual literacy, bringing them into the rich world of the Humanities and asking students to research art from many eras and cultures. Our Design students learn state of the art techniques and CONNECT with industry representatives and local businesses for feedback and internships. The B.A. in Art provides foundational knowledge that encourages students to CREATE utilizing the newest technologies along with traditional art media. Graduating seniors from Design and Art organize presentations and exhibitions of their work as a final culmination of their tremendous efforts.

The Position


Successful candidates will demonstrate an ability to teach the department's foundational courses in drawing, painting, and post-studio to offer courses in their contemporary art specialization at all levels, and to integrate current pedagogical practices into our art curriculum. Candidates who are making meaningful and unique contributions to the intellectual and social interchanges within the profession are especially encouraged to apply. We seek an artist and educator with an interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary research and creative practice.



Responsibilities


Responsibilities include teaching three art activity courses per semester. Other duties include curriculum development, student advisement, participation in developing departmental policies, procedures and guidelines, involvement in student outcomes assessment, and committee service at the department, college, and university level. Faculty will be expected to continue their professional creative practice.



Qualifications



Required Qualifications



  • Applicants must have experience in working with students from diverse age, socioeconomic, cultural, and academic backgrounds.

  • An MFA degree in Art, Studio Art, Interdisciplinary Practice, or an appropriate area from an accredited institution or foreign equivalency

  • College or university level teaching experience

  • Experience as a practicing artist with a professional exhibition record

  • Proficiency in 2D art practices

  • Current knowledge of issues related to studio practices and portfolio development

  • Applicants must demonstrate commitment, ability, and experience in working with, teaching and mentoring a diverse student population

  • An understanding of curriculum and course development



Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience with post-studio, social practices, time-based media, sound, and/or interdisciplinary practice

Satisfactory completion of a background check (including a criminal records check) is required for employment. CSU will make a conditional offer of employment, which may be rescinded if the background check reveals disqualifying information, and/or it is discovered that the candidate knowingly withheld or falsified information. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the continued employment of a current CSU employee who was conditionally offered the position.
