Task Description: Aircraft Mechanic II (23022): 

Aircraft Mechanics II must have a combination of experience to repair engines, sheet metal, and structural, hydraulic, electrical, power train and general mechanical maintenance of moderate difficulty, required to meet the assigned missions. Additionally provides input to Maintenance Engineering Changes (MEC), Estimated Cost of Damage preparation (ECOD) and assist in the recommendation of changes to (MWO). Individuals must be able to prioritize workloads and are required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks. Mechanic IIs can inspect Mechanic IIs and Is. This mechanic maintains repairs and modifies aircraft structures and structural components of moderate difficulty, maintains and repairs aircraft components including but not limited to flight controls, engines, hydraulics, pneumatics, fuel systems, and mechanical components, applies technical knowledge of airframe and power plant systems in determining equipment malfunctions and applies required expertise in restoring equipment condition and or operation, and applies comprehensive technical expertise to solve moderate to complex problems by interpreting technical documentation such as blueprints or manufactures’ manuals. Must have a thorough knowledge of aircraft mechanical component troubleshooting, repair procedures and replacement of parts, requires broad knowledge of aircraft sheet metal/structural modifications and repair, must have basic knowledge of electrical theory, must have thorough knowledge of aircraft unique tools such as test equipment, torque wrenches, dial indicators, micrometers, sheet metal brakes and sheers. This job requires working knowledge of technical publications. The incumbent receives technical guidance, as required, from supervisor or higher-level technician, will occasionally be required to lead teams through more complex aircraft relevant tasks, and may be required to make entries in aircraft logs and records. Must be able to prioritize workload to maintain schedules on assigned projects. May require specialization in sheet-metal, electric work, avionics or other aircraft systems related disciplines.

Skill and Knowledge:  Shall have the ability to troubleshoot malfunctions in various aircraft systems and be able to perform general Organizational Level maintenance and possess one or more of the specialties of the assigned aircraft below:

Aviation Life Support Systems (ALSS), Egress and Environmental Systems


  • Must be knowledgeable of technical directives, NAMP programs, and shall be knowledgeable of and understand basic supply procedures.

  • Aircraft Mechanic II shall have experience writing with clarity and technical accuracy, and exhibit leadership and ensure adherence to all applicable policies and procedures.

  • Possess a high degree of expertise in the control and coordination of aircraft maintenance.

  • Thorough working knowledge of applicable maintenance/technical manuals and publications.

  • Thorough working knowledge of aircraft maintenance records.

  • Working understanding of the aircraft and aircraft systems.

Responsibility:  Performs requirements in accordance with the procedures established in the PWS. Specifically performs preventative maintenance on assigned T/M/S aircraft ALSS and Egress Systems assigned to the activity IAW T/M/S Maintenance Requirements Cards (MRC's) and approved directives. May perform services involving A&E material handling and shall have explosive handling personnel qualifications and certifications (QUAL/CERT) required IAW OPNAVINST 8023.24 when performing these duties. Performs diagnosis and corrective actions, disassembles, inspects, evaluates, and accomplishes necessary repairs, lays out work according to technical instructions and technical directives.  Determines what repairs, modifications, and part replacements are required. May be required to verify work performed by another for which he/she is qualified to perform.

Task Requirements:


  • Familiar with duties assigned to personnel within all work centers.

  • Process Visual Information Display System/Maintenance Action Forms (VIDS/MAF) from aircrew or maintenance technicians in accordance with OPNAVINST 4790.2 Series, Navy, and Company Instructions.

  • Performs aircraft maintenance functions of the Aircraft Organizational Level maintenance.

  • Scheduled and unscheduled maintenance support for assigned P-3 aircraft.

  • Performs inspection, disassembly, repair, servicing, TD compliance, modification, assembly, surface finish removal, corrosion control, preservation/de-preservation services

  • Aircraft maintenance action documentation via logs, records, forms, and electronic means

  • Troubleshoot malfunctions in Airframe Systems and related Sub-Systems.

  • Use hand tools, power tools, machines, specific and general aviation test measurement and diagnostic equipment.

  • Read and interpret manufacturers' maintenance manuals, military technical manuals, service bulletins, technical data, engineering data, blueprints, manufacturers’ drawings, and other specifications to determine feasibility and method of repairing or replacing malfunctioning or damaged components

  • Perform Pre/Post checks, fueling, and operation of support equipment, to include conditional/scheduled inspections and periodic maintenance support equipment.

  • Detachment on-load and off-load.

  • Flight Line operations/functions at detachment locations as required

  • Confined space operations to include fuel cell entry

  • Perform APU power operations

  • Aircraft launch and recovery

  • Aircraft movement

  • General aircraft maintenance

  • Perform general housekeeping and organization of workstation(s), shop(s), maintenance facility to provide a clean, safe, and FOD free environment

  • Perform shift work and/or overtime as required

  • Other duties and task as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:


  • P-3 Environmental Control Systems Organizational Maintenance (C-603-9532)

  • 10 years or more of Organizational level maintenance

  • P-3 Flight Engineer School and have earned NEC 8251, OR have completed P-3 Aircraft Engine Ground Turn School

  • Make Aircraft, Egress, Armament and Support Equipment Logbooks and Records entries.

  • Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Representative (CDQAR) Egress/Environmental and Electrical Systems

  • Team Member (TM)

  • Quality Assurance Safety Observer (QASO)

  • Plane Handler

Basic Qualifications:


  • Aviation Structural Mechanic Class A1 (C-602-2034 and C-602-2033)

  • Six or more years’ Aviation Structural Mechanic (Egress and Environmental Systems)

  • Five or more years P-3 maintenance experience

  • Must be able to work 1st or 2nd shift as required to support operations

  • Must be able to work flexible schedule Mon-Fri or Sun-Thur as required by the customer.

  • Shall be able to travel in support of detachment operations as required

  • Must be able to climb ladders, raised platforms, and work on top of or below the aircraft.

  • Must be able to use hand and power tools

  • Must have dexterity to handle small parts

  • Must be eligible for a Common Access Card (CAC)

  • Satisfactory completion National Agency Check Local Records Check and Credit (NACLC), and Access National Agency Check with written Inquires (ANACI) resulting in eligibility for a SECRET clearance shall be required of all employees
