This position is primarily responsible for developing strategy and managing all activities related to the Buildings Sector architecture, interior design, engineering, urbanism and planning, project management, quality assurance, quality control, and technical performance standards. Reporting to the Sector Leader, the Cross-Practice Technical Director collaborates with all Market Leaders, Discipline Directors, Team Leaders, and assists the High-Performance Cross-Practice Leader by providing design leadership and consulting on sustainable building design with projects ranging from net zero engineering consultation to life cycle analysis.



Responsibilities include:


Technical Services



  • Manage, guide, and document standards development and quality checklists following applicable national and local codes across all Buildings Sector disciplines.

  • Incorporate industry best practices while maintaining Woolpert Project Fundamentals to improve project delivery.

  • Facilitate technical drawing and specification reviews with project managers and technical staff.

  • Facilitate QAQC committees or task groups within the sector.

  • Monitor, conduct discussions with staff, and recommend appropriate action regarding code compliance, application of standards, or technical interpretations on behalf of Woolpert.

  • Research, develop, and implement strategic plans designed to advance Woolpert's technical quality and performance initiatives and standards.

  • Provide leadership and guidance in high-performance design including consulting on sustainability, energy modeling, net zero, and life cycle cost analysis.


Advocacy



  • Serve as an industry advocate and subject matter expert with respect to quality and high-performance design.

  • Actively participate in associated industry organizations to stay current on issues impacting area of responsibility.

  • Serve as a point of contact and proactively manage relationships with select clients, organizations, and government agencies.


Leadership



  • Develop annual strategies and implementation tactics and provide input into annual goals and budget.

  • Contribute to the total effectiveness of the Buildings Sector; communicating openly, addressing issues proactively, offering creative ideas and working as a positive, engaged team member.

  • Perform project related work as required.


People Management: Provide recommendations to the Market Directors and Discipline Leaders regarding hiring key staff and employee performance goals for current staff. Provide regular feedback and collaborate with PMs and PDs to achieve individual and service line goals. Effectively resolves conflict within team by initiating and facilitating communication. Mentors and coaches staff. The Cross-Practice Leader does not manager people directly.


Project Management: Assists project managers in negotiations or performs negotiation of project schedule, fee, scope and contract terms. Assists in preparing proposals, and participates in interviews, and/or firm capabilities presentations to potential clients. Identifies, addresses, and resolves in close coordination with appropriate individuals, any project issues impacting client goals, objectives, and/or client satisfaction within a practice area. The Cross-Practice Leader does not manage projects individually.


General Qualifications



  • BS in Engineering or related field.

  • 15 years' experience in as a Professional Engineer

  • 5 years' experience with direct QAQC management responsibilities

  • 5 years' experience assisting with or working directly on high-performance engineering projects

  • Excellent verbal communication skills and technical writing ability

  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills

  • Ability to work with a wide variety of individuals and disciplines.

  • Experience with consensus building and large group facilitation

  • Proficient in MS Office, Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Teams



  • Must be mentally and physically capable of performing all essential duties required of the position.

  • Must be able to make sound decisions/recommendations based on the evaluation and synthesis of project information and data.

  • Must demonstrate an enterprising, innovative, proactive management approach.

  • Must possess high levels of demonstrated leadership ability.

  • Must be able to establish and maintain rapport with clients, management, and employees.

  • Must possess strong negotiation and problem-solving skills.

  • Must possess excellent presentation and communication (oral and written) skills.

  • Must be able to successfully manage multiple, competing priorities.


Travel:



  • Must be able to travel to meet the needs and demands of the practice. Assumed 25% travel


Resulting Physical Qualifications:



  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.

  • Must be able to operate and manipulate standard office equipment.

  • Must be able to occasionally reach, bend, climb and/or balance.

  • Must be able to frequently lift and/or move 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
