Core Responsibilities


  • The Project Specialist will support the Project Manager & Distributed Resource Integration team in developing and managing the Distributed System Platform (DSP) that integrates Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into the Company's short term and long term planning and operations. The Project Specialist will coordinate with internal and external stakeholders during the development of the DSP and coordinate with all internal groups to continually improve various processes and tools associated with the DSP (including forecasting, planning, engineering, operations, and marketing). The Project Specialist will also be responsible for managing projects related to the DSP including the Company's Volt-Var Optimization (VVO) portfolio of projects, and the ConnectDER project

  • Ensure that safe work practices are followed and the environment is fully protected in accordance with Company policy and governmental regulations.

  • Develop a proactive, customer-centric and stakeholder-centric culture to foster trust and confidence among customers and improve value for all our stakeholders.

  • Engage internal and external stakeholders to provide prompt resolution to customer, regulatory bodies and other stakeholder inquiries and collaborations relating to Distributed Energy Resource forecasting, integration, monitoring, planning, and operation in the Con Edison System.

  • Supports coordination and cross-departmental alignment of Distributed Energy Resources integration including but not limited to short, medium and long range planning, forecasting and operations.

  • Lead the project efforts with various engineering groups, field forces, and IT to deploy voltage regulation equipment in Area Substations and distribution system circuits.

  • Assist in developing and implementing a Distributed System Platform to facilitate the integration of Distributed Energy Resources into the 5 year planning process of the Distributed System Implementation Plan including planning, forecasting and operations.

  • Interface with various company groups to evaluate and integrate DER resources for transmission and distribution load relief programs. This will include (but not be limited to) load forecast sensitivity analysis, interconnection alternatives, economic analysis, operation considerations and procedures, regulator permitting and market place interactions.

  • Interface with various Company groups to develop tools that facilitate DER adoption (i.e. Hosting Capacity maps.)

  • Continue to communicate, engage and partner with lead stakeholders such as PSC, NYSERDA, REBNY and other DER participants.

  • Perform other related tasks and assignments as required.

Required Education/Experience


  • Master's Degree with 2 years of work experience; Or

  • Bachelor's Degree with 3 years of work experience; Or

  • Associate's Degree with 5 years of work experience; Or

  • High School Diploma/GED with 7 years of work experience.

Preferred Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree Engineering degrees are preferred as well as Business degrees with a focus on economics, markets and finance. Or

Required Work Experience


  • Must have a minimum of 3-5 years work experience related to the engineering and/or operations of an electrical utility including technical knowledge of utility electrical systems or 3-5 years experience with energy markets and economics (such as NYISO, PJM, NEISO, SPP, ERCOT or other commodity and financial markets). Required

  • Strong leadership skills, innovation, and ability to adapt to change are essential. Required

  • Must have exceptional project management, communication, negotiation, and organizational skills. Required

  • Excellent knowledge in computer applications such as MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, Project), as well as other company software systems is required. Required

  • Distribution planning, operational experience, forecasting and capital program experience is strongly preferred. Preferred

  • Experience with energy efficiency, demand response and distributed energy resources, including combined heat and power, battery storage and solar is also strongly preferred. Preferred

  • Experience in developing and leading software implementation projects is preferred. Pref

  • Driver's License Required

Other Physical Demands


  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.

  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.

  • Must be able and willing to occasionally travel to regulatory and industry meetings in Albany or other places.
