Position Overview:

The Area Manager will directly oversee construction related operations within his/her designated area from helping to develop bid strategy to project execution.  Equally important is the ability to “Think big Picture” for company resources and customer relationships.  The Area Manager will also be responsible for providing a safe workplace for employees, developing employees for future roles, and customer/community relations.  The Area Manager will take the lead in ensuring all lines of business are working together in order to meet the overarching company goal of maximizing material sales and overall profitability.  The Area Manager will lead by example by demonstrating the core competences required for the position.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions):


  • Overall responsibility for paving and construction activities within respective area including establishing costs for bidding, bid analysis, executing bids, and completing projects on time and on budget.  Oversight of entire process from pre-bid to project completion.

  • A complete understanding of the market, the players in the market (competitors/customers) and how best to balance internal construction activities and external sales with the goal of maximizing overall company profitability.

  • Develop and maintain a strong competency and understanding in the software used by the company to assist in analysis, forecasting, bid strategy and cost estimates.

  • Develop and maintain customer relationships with the DOT, General Contractors and other key accounts such as larger HMA installers with a focus on instilling customer loyalty by providing top quality materials, workmanship, and service.

  • Planning and coordination of people, equipment, materials, etc. between various divisions and customers.

  • Manage all construction contracts including cost projections and change orders within the area; ensure proper staffing of project supervision, crews, traffic control, laborers, equipment, subcontractors, etc.

  • Oversee scheduling of construction crews, trucks, and oversee all projects to ensure project execution and build out.

  • Provide effective communication and long-term planning to the Pike team to drive a high level of performance.

  • Estimate construction paving projects in identified market area using company software system

  • Knowledgeable of Construction Market Segment – municipal market matrix (tons/ASP by municipality), competitor backlog and capacity, competitor bonding capacity, key paving customer accounts

  • Prepare and submit cost estimates for review and bid packages to owners

  • Manage contracts within territory (Bid-Build-Bill)

  • Oversee a successful project “life cycle” (Bid g Schedule g build g bill g closeout)

  • Coordination of People and Equipment

  • Adhere to any and all state and federal regulations, if applicable, as set forth by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), or any other regulatory agency.

Safety:


  • Oversee and participate in Safety Committee meetings/activities, Toolbox Talks, THINK program, and other Company policies and key initiatives.

  • Responsible for ensuring employees are engaged in safety and assessing risks

  • Promote a safe work environment and ensure regulatory compliance with OSHA, MUTCD Manual and applicable DOT specifications.

  • Implement and promote the Corporate Safety, Health & Environmental Plan; apply to field operations on various projects.

  • Adhere to any and all state and federal regulations, if applicable, as set forth by the US Department of Transportation (DOT), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), or any other regulatory agency.

Supervisory Responsibilities:


  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the company’s policies, procedures, and applicable laws.

  • Assist with interviewing and hiring process as necessary.

  • Planning, assigning, and directing work.

  • Willingness to develop subordinates’ technical and leadership skills and make recommendations for new job opportunities when appropriate.

  • Effective management of employee performance through coaching, feedback (written and verbal), rewards, and discipline when necessary.  Must be able to establish and communicate goals/expectations for individuals, crew, and projects.

  • Appraising performance, including annual evaluations and new employee 60-day evaluations.

  • Addressing complaints and resolving problems in a timely manner.

  • Lead by example.

  • Ability to get work done through others using effective delegation, scheduling, and time management practices.

  • Work in conjunction with HR team to ensure workforce sustainability, development, and succession.

  • Must be willing to travel and work away from home when required.

  • Must be willing to work nights and weekends when necessary.

  • Report to the assigned job site in uniform and ready to begin work at the designated start time.

  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual.

  • Strict adherence to Pike policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Manual.

  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required. 

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education/Experience:


  • Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.E.) from a four year college; three to five years in the construction materials business with specific experience in paving, installation, earthwork and utilities and a working knowledge of road reclamation and milling as well as transportation and delivery. 

  • Previous supervisory experience.

General Requirements:


  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, contracts, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  The ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively to customers or employees of organization.

  • Must have strong people skills, a proven track record of successful job and team management from start to finish; must have the ability to cultivate valuable customer/employee relationships; successfully manage multiple jobs simultaneously; and have a keen business sense. 

  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal, computer skills and knowledge of state DOT regulations and OSHA are a must.

  • Must have the demonstrated ability to:

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and dependable transportation to and from the job site.

Knowledge/Skill Requirements:


  • Must possess and have working knowledge to complete necessary mathematical calculations.

  • Must demonstrate the ability to use a computer to communicate and analyze data.  This includes but is not limited to the use of Outlook, MS Office programs, construction software and web-based programs.

  • Be familiar with all roles, equipment, and tasks associated with your project(s) and have the ability and willingness to fill in on any role or task as necessary.
