The User Experience and Visual Design team passionately investigates and strategically crafts frictionless human experiences that facilitate the sharing of the world’s collected knowledge. Because what is known must be shared.

Within the User Experience and Visual Design team, the Lead UI Engineer is part of the team responsible for ensuring a future-focused user interface strategy and approach across products and platforms. This includes consulting with UI Architects, User Experience Designers, and User Interface Designers to produce high-quality interactive products that support an overall superior, accessible, performant and secure interface for our member institutions and their staff/patrons. 

Responsibilities:


  • Perform high level analysis and design software for new and existing systems

  • Use industry standard programming techniques to translate requirements and designs into code

  • Consult with UX Designers, UI Designers, UI Architects, and embedded developer teams from initial discussions and concepting through planning, execution, and deployment.

  • Identify opportunities for interface consistency and interaction evolution, including but not limited to well-structured, semantic interfaces.

  • Work with developer teams to define reusable components as well as determine product theming and frameworks based on creative designs.

  • Facilitate cross-functional ideation and alignment sessions.

  • Effectively implement the vision of a UI design, meeting responsive, accessible and semantic expectations.

  • Provide innovative front-end development expertise with a strong focus on the user and their experience, including performance concerns.

  • Assist in requirements creation by working with the product manager and other developers

  • Support the application in production

  • Contribute to architectural reviews

  • Participate in the analysis and implementation of third-party solutions for OCLC applications with the ability to understand the impact and analyze the risk

  • Lead and mentor junior developers on the team.

Qualifications


  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a Computer Science-related discipline required

  • Foundational knowledge of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

  • Experience using or developing RESTful APIs and design systems.

  • Hands-on experience using React, or a similar framework.

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills are a must as the UI Engineer will often mentor developer colleagues to build up their front-end development skills.

  • Strong experience in or aptitude for working with a cross-discipline team to build and maintain a responsive, accessible digital experience.

  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, including verbal, written, listening and customer relationship building

  • Creative problem-solver with an open mind for learning new techniques and practices.

  • Comfortable working closely with UX and UI Designers and within the design process.

  • Portfolio showcasing contributions to responsive experiences that demonstrate front end competency.

  • Ability to initiative and drive complex projects to completion.

  • 4+ years of front-end development experience working on complex Web and/or application interfaces.

  • Knowledge and understanding of accessibility standards, ARIA, and internationalization.

  • Knowledge and understanding of SEO best practices.

  • Knowledge and understanding of hybrid mobile development practices.
