Job Description:

Crain's Cleveland Business Events Manager

The Events Manager serves as an ambassador for the Crain's Cleveland Business brand, working closely with Crain's senior leadership and sponsors to ensure an excellent experience for event attendees.

This individual will be responsible for leading the Crain's Cleveland Business events team in planning, producing and executing 20+ business events over the calendar year. This position will help to drive the execution of Crain's rapidly expanding corporate conference and event portfolio with the ultimate goal of increasing brand awareness, generating revenue and creating customer and partner loyalty.

Objectives & Responsibilities:


  • Manage the overall strategy, planning and execution of Crain's conferences, award receptions, seminars, networking and custom events.

  • Provide leadership, motivation, direction and support to the event team.

  • Collaborate with internal sales and marketing functions.

  • Full budget oversight - management, analysis and reconciliation. This individual will handle RFPs, in addition to negotiating contracts with external vendors and venues.

  • Manage each event's P&L statement including revenue and expenses.

  • Develop and monitor timelines and deadlines related to all aspects of events, ensuring the information is communicated with staff, contractors and other constituents.

  • Lead the strategy, development and execution of marketing programs that drive event registrations through various channels (i.e. email, social, web, print).

  • Oversee and manage operational and administration functions for onsite event execution.

  • Analyze, evaluate and stay on top of event trends and competition to gain insights, avoid over-exposed speakers and topics.

  • Identify and create partnership agreements with vendors, venues and organizations

  • Manage third party vendors, including hotels, caterers, A/V, and others, as necessary

  • Manage the nominations process for all of Crain's award program nominations.

  • Work closely with the editorial and custom departments on agendas/speakers and programming concepts

  • Other duties as needed.

Basic Qualifications:


  • At least 3 years of direct experience in event management.

  • Strong project management, sales and marketing skills.

  • Past experience managing at least one direct report.

  • Must have experience working with corporate sponsors.

  • Large scale event experience, B2B preferred.

  • Experience with negotiating contracts pertaining to meetings and events.

  • Expertise in cost estimating, project budgeting and reporting.

  • Ability to lead and motivate a team with significant attention to detail.

  • Proven ability to plan, manage, and execute multiple projects and timelines simultaneously.

  • Strong negotiation, project and time management skills.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement.

  • Poised and confident manner as position interacts with senior level executives.

  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint a must.

  • Must be able to lift and carry at least 20 lbs.

  • Must be able to work traditional onsite in our downtown Cleveland office, as well as, non-traditional hours, including mornings and evenings.

Preferences


  • Bachelor's degree in Hospitality, Marketing, Communications, Business or a related field.

  • Experience with various event registration software platforms is desirable

  • Northeast Ohio/Cleveland area knowledge of vendors and venues

  • Creative approach to events seen by adding new elements to existing events or creating new events.

  • Experience working with graphic designers and/or with InDesign and other Adobe suite products as needed.

  • Background setting benchmarks for the outcome of the event along with post-event analysis

  • Superior work ethic and commitment to customer satisfaction - both internal and external.

  • Ability to collaborate in cross-team environment.

  • Uses good judgment and can act independently within specific parameters/guidelines to support the execution of activities.

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.
