The Cornell University Graduate School is committed to student health and well-being as being foundational for academic and life success. About Our Position

The Graduate Student Life Advisor a critical team member in the Office of Graduate Student Life at the Graduate School. A core function of this position is to meet individually with graduate students to provide advising support and problem-solving to meet the student's non-academic needs. As reflected by Cornell's core values, the Graduate Student Life Advisor will be available to all graduate students at Cornell and be an active champion to create a safe and welcoming campus culture for students from historically underrepresented groups. In addition, the Graduate Student Life Advisor will use student development theories, best programming practices, and knowledge of the graduate student life experience to develop effective programming strategies and identify potential synergies and opportunities to increase impact. In addition, this position provides systems-thinking approach to using advising technology (i.e. Salesforce) to develop strategies that allow the Graduate School to be more proactive in providing student life support. As a key member of the Graduate School staff, the Advisor works in concert with Graduate School colleagues and also develops and maintains relationships with campus partners such as Cornell Health, Student Disability Services, Dean of Students Office, and other support structures throughout Cornell. The Graduate Student Life Advisor has a high level of commitment to social justice and is driven learn and stay abreast of graduate student trends. Due to the nature of this role, some evenings and weekends, and general flexibility with scheduling will be required. This position reports to the Graduate School Senior Assistant Dean for Graduate Student Life.

This is a full-time, two-year term position with the possibility of renewal based on funding, needs of the program, and successful performance.

  • Work collaboratively with other units on campus that provide support and resources for graduate and professional students, identifying potential synergies and opportunities to increase impact.

  • Engage actively in determining and championing the needs of our graduate and professional student community to internal stakeholders and the larger campus community.

  • Implement, deliver and assess various workshops and programs for graduate students that focus on a proactive/preventative approach to support a healthy student life experience at Cornell.

  • Innovative thinker with the ability to take initiative to address emerging and changing priorities.

  • Ability to work independently and autonomously without direct supervision and possess the ability to make sound judgement calls when necessary and relay information appropriately and consistently.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Work, Higher Education, Health Education, Student Affairs, College Student Development, or related field, and at least 2 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability to advise students, show good judgement about when to make referrals, set boundaries, and equip students with skills and strategies to engage in self-advocacy.

  • Experience working closely with students from diverse and/or historically underrepresented backgrounds.

  • Strong program planning and event management skills to implement, assess and support various programs and workshops for students.

  • Ability to be strategic and make structural improvements; utilize or create new systems to make improvements to our practice.

  • Strong understanding of academic community environment and demonstrated experience advising students on confidential matters.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and communication skills, and strong presentation skills are required.

  • Experience working with graduate or professional student communities.

  • Ability to work as a part of a team; strong commitment to collaborative work.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Graduate degree.

  • Experience with case management and project management.

  • Knowledge of Cornell infrastructure and support (i.e. Salesforce, Peoplesoft, etc.).

  • Knowledge of Cornell policies that pertain to student life at Cornell.

  • Knowledge of Cornell Graduate School policies and processes.

  • Knowledge of civil rights laws including Title IX, federal and state laws and policies.
