Position Description:

This position is responsible for supporting preformulation activities associated with small molecule lead optimization and solid state and physical characterization projects ranging from preclinical/clinical/commercial development to support successful development candidacy. Success in this position requires a highly motivated individual who can provide technical expertise both in-lab and working with CRO/CMOs. The qualified candidate will have experience in solid state chemistry, physical and physicochemical characterization, solubility, chemical kinetics, and preclinical formulation development. In addition, they will possess excellent communication and inter-personal skills to effectively work in a team-based environment.

Position Requirements:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design and conduct preformulation studies to evaluate the physicochemical, biopharmaceutical and solid state properties of new compounds, including but not limited to salt/polymorph screen, solubility studies, and chemical kinetics studies.
• Continually current on scientific literature and trends relevant to pharmaceutical chemistry.
• Collaborate with other CMC functions to support the development of solid oral formulations in a timely fashion while maintaining the highest scientific quality.
• Provide guidance and expertise to project teams in timely manner in solid state and preformulation activities
• Interprets data, draws conclusions, presents findings and author technical reports and presentations.
• Develop preclinical formulations and write formulation protocols to support efficacy and tox studies.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• No supervisory responsibilities

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
Education:
• Bachelor's degree in related discipline and twelve years of related experience; or
• Master's degree in related discipline and ten years of related experience; or
• PhD degree in related discipline and zero to three years of related experience; or
• Equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience:
• Hands-on experience working with various lab equipment such as DSC, TGA, DVS, XRPD, FTIR, Raman, UPLC, UPLC-MS, and Mastersizer.
• Hands-on experience working with dissolution, FBRM and crystalizers a plus.

Knowledge/Skills:
• Strong working and theoretical knowledge of prefomulation activities including solubility, dissolution solid state chemistry, degradation kinetics, precliniacl formulations, and enabled formulations.
• Strong knowledge of pharmaceutics, solid oral formulation development and experience of the various phases of drug development for oral dosage forms.
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Exhibits technical proficiency and can work effectively in a collaborative environment on complex problems with ingenuity and creativity.
• Knowledge and understanding of cGMP is a plus.
• Highly organized, critical thinker with a great learning capacity and problem-solving skills.
• Effective communicator and the ability to work in a collaborative environment.
• Proficient with broad use computer software, applications, and systems such as statistical software, MS Office, GastroPlus, and specialized other applications as needed for job.
• Great attention to details and documentation skills.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Environment: primarily working in laboratories or in office
• Exposures encountered, such as hazardous materials, extreme cold.
