Modern Healthcare is looking for a skilled and competitive reporter to cover disparities in access and representation in healthcare, the impact of structural and interpersonal racism on the industry and the solutions progressive industry stakeholders and policymakers are taking to address these issues.

This reporter will transcend beats to explore everything from efforts to innovate for Medicaid beneficiaries, coverage and clinical challenges within the dual eligible population, access to telehealth and diversifying hospitals, clinics, medical schools, C-suites and boardrooms to better represent America's increasingly diversified landscape. All stories reported by this reporter must concentrate on how these issues affect the business of healthcare and ultimately, the quality of care. Stories should concentrate on policies, operational and financial innovations, best practices and challenges to addressing health disparities.

Modern Healthcare wants a reporter who will establish a diverse roster of sources in pursuit of scoops, investigative targets and compelling business stories. Successful candidates must write quickly, accurately and authoritatively when big stories break, and have an established record of producing compelling, agenda-setting enterprise work.

The ability to work collegially and effectively with others is essential as this reporter will be expected to routinely team up with other reporters to tell stories through words, video, photographs and graphics. Experience identifying and analyzing newsworthy data sets is preferred.

Basic Qualifications


  • BA in journalism or related field

  • Four years minimum of healthcare business reporting experience

  • Ability to meet deadlines and file clean, concise, and comprehensive copy on complex issues with a high degree of accuracy, balance and relatability

  • Must be comfortable working in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and must be curious and able to generate enterprise feature ideas

  • Must have attention to detail, industry knowledge and the ability to interpret data for trend stories

  • Ability to work with editors to develop story ideas, schedule them and deliver them on time while keeping in close touch with editors about developments on news beat

  • Ability to digest large amounts of information, "see the story," and execute with urgency as needed

  • Ability to work remotely or in our Chicago office while keeping your editors and colleagues informed of your assignments and developments

  • Minimum of three recent clips

Preferences


  • Aptitude for translating healthcare jargon

  • Experience covering public health and healthcare equity issues.

  • Candidates most likely to excel in this position will be ones who are self-started, motivated by excellence, competitive, curious, and enjoy being part of a team

  • Web publishing, multimedia and social media experience

  • Interest and skills in database journalism

This position is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.
