Location: Knoxville, Tennessee

Job Description:

Requisition Id6614

Purpose

The Vehicle Connectivity & Autonomy Research (VCAR) Group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking to fill an Associate Research Staff position with a focus on analysis and modeling of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). The VCAR Group leads cross-disciplinary research to develop, evaluate and optimize advanced connected and automated vehicle (CAV) applications and systems and to advance our understanding of energy implications and opportunities of advanced mobility technologies.

The successful candidate will be able to work with a research team from various backgrounds to perform simulations and analysis that assist with the development and assessment of new control strategies for CAVs operating in a traffic corridor/network. The candidate will contribute to algorithm development and the processing and analysis of both measured and simulated traffic data. The candidate will also conduct microscopic traffic simulations and other analyses to characterize the energy-saving and mobility benefits for novel CAVs applications.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

You will work with staff and independently in ORNL's National Transportation Research Center to research the impacts of transportation technologies for connected and automated vehicles, shared and electric mobility. Specific activities and duties include the following:

  • Independently conduct research that will enhance our understanding of CAVs operations and their benefits for the transportation system and leading to new insights for improved control strategies, new functions and methods.

  • Be familiar with the state of the art in CAV technologies. Be well versed in various microscopic traffic modeling and simulation programs, including VISSIM and/or SUMO.

  • Develop traffic models representative of real traffic corridors/networks and perform microscopic traffic simulations for the evaluation of CAVs system performance.

  • Have excellent oral and written skills for preparing and presenting research results to sponsors, peer reviewers, industry partners and others and at technical meetings such as SAE, TRB and IEEE sponsored conferences.

Basic Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, civil or transportation engineering or a related field with a focus on connected and automated vehicles.

  • Knowledge of traffic microscopic modeling and simulation software tools (VISSIM and/or Sumo) is required.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to make presentations to sponsors and others and to prepare reports, proposals, and publications/journal articles.

  • Be proficient in the use of industry standard modeling and simulation tools, such as MATLAB/SIMULINK, as well as standard Microsoft Office tools

  • Strong interpersonal skills to support team building and leadership.

  • Demonstrated publication record of scientific results in either peer-reviewed journals or presentations at national meetings is expected.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with traffic signal phase and timing (SPaT) protocols and adaptive signal timing is strongly desired.

  • A publication history in prestigious international conferences and journals.

  • Experience writing research funding proposals.

  • Prior work experience with traffic management centers (TMCs) and/or with vehicle OEMs will be valued for this position.

Some travel will be required for this position.

No clearance is required.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
