Overview:
The Bethel Valley Radiochemical Processing (BVRP) Group within the Radioisotope Science and Technology Division (RSTD), Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking applicants for a Research and Development Staff Member to support radioisotope production development and operations.

The BVRP Group within the RSTD, ORNL has an immediate opening for a Research and Development Staff Member. We are seeking a highly motivated, highly organized, and talented candidate to join our growing team to work on our expanding radioisotope production portfolio. Utilizing the unique capabilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and related radiochemical and nuclear processing facilities, the BVRP supports a variety of projects supplying difficult to produce radioisotopes essential for medical, research, and industrial applications. Production of these radioisotopes support the missions of the Department of Energy (DOE) and other government agencies, as well as the needs of private organizations and institutions. Our current focus is on production and processing research and development to stand up new production capabilities for medical and industrial radioisotopes, including Sr-89, Ba-133, Lu-177, W-188, Ac-225, Ac-227 and Th-229.

Major Duties and Responsibilities


  • Lead and support isotope production and development activities in a team environment in radiological and nuclear facilities; including hot cell and glovebox production operations

  • Process radioisotopes in hot cell and glovebox facilities

  • Manage radiological inventory tracking

  • Develop solutions to isotope processing and production challenges

  • Engage with scientists, engineers, and technicians to establish solutions to complex problems

  • Develop processing procedures in support of radioisotope production and operational excellence

  • Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and quality program requirement

  • Mentor and train junior staff

Basic Qualifications


  • Ph.D. in chemistry or related field and 0-2 or more years of relevant experience.

  • Demonstrated ability and hands-on experience with safe handling of highly radioactive materials

  • Must include a CV with a publication list and a cover letter addressing background as it fulfills the job requirements and desired skills

  • Excellent communication skills are essential to enable effective interaction with peers, technical and non-technical staff

Preferred Qualifications


  • Ph.D in Chemistry or related field and 2 or more years of relevant experience.

  • Experience in isotope production activities and chemical purification technique

  • Experience in wet-chemistry operations and nuclear detection methods including gamma-ray spectroscopy is desirable.

  • Experience with glove box and/or remote hot cell operations
