Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking two Linux system admins to support the Neutron Science Directorate (NScD). NScD operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 30 instruments and over 400 Linux servers for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists.
The Linux system admins are responsible for the operation of computing infrastructure that is critical to data acquisition, data reduction, data analysis, data management and instrument control systems. You will work closely with other group members within ITSD and interface with external scientific users, instrument scientists, and scientific associates at HFIR and SNS. You will also work with other technical groups including data reduction and data analysis software developers at the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD). You will report to the Neutron Systems Engineering and Support group leader within the Information Technology Services Division (ITSD).
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Install, configure, customize, and maintain Linux software including basic support for scientific software
Linux package repository management, creation, and customization
Use of configuration management to enforce standardization of environment
Linux system performance tuning and optimization
Deploy new Linux systems into on-premises cloud environment
Build custom cloud ready Linux images with site specific customizations
Create custom metrics and dashboards to measure utilization and performance
Provide technical consulting in the selection and purchase of hardware and software systems
Ensure the secure and effective operation of computing systems through compliance with ORNL procedures and IT Internal Operating Procedures and backups
Provide off hours support during maintenance windows and on-call support rotation
Develop and document team processes
Provide suggestions for process improvement and implement when required
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related technical subjects and two plus years of experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience)
Experience managing a virtualized environment including tuning and maintenance
Extensive experience with the Linux Server Platform
Experience with on premises or public cloud platforms
Basic Networking experience including Software Defined Networking technologies
Ability to script in shell or Python for system automation and integration
Excellent interpersonal skills suitable for user support and ability to work well with peer system administrators
A strong preference towards standardized automation of system administration tasks
Ability to time manage and prioritize projects
Good documentation skills
Root cause analysis of technical issues.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with on premises cloud native platforms (VMware, Openstack, Apache Cloudstack and others)
Basic understanding of network communication and demonstrated troubleshooting techniques
Strong knowledge of multiple current operating systems
Previous experience working in a government, scientific, or academic environment
Demonstrated ability to perform job tasks while considering cyber security risk of those tasks, and consulting with security professionals when necessary.
Basic understanding of orchestration and automation design
Understanding of high-performance storage design.
Knowledge of enterprise class server/storage hardware
Experience in an environment requiring change control processes
Good written and verbal communication skills, in English.
Ability to work in a group and alone on various projects
