Job Description:

Requisition Id6835

Overview:

We are seeking an R&D Associate who will focus on research and development in the area of materials joining andallied material manufacturing). This position resides in the Materials Joining Group in the Materials Structures &Processing Section, Materials Science and Technology Division, Physics Science Directorate at Oak Ridge NationalLaboratory (ORNL).

As part of our research team, you will investigate high temperature microstructures and the mechanical propertiesrelationship of weld joints, especially dissimilar metal welds for fossil and nuclear energy applications. In this role, you will be a part of an interdisciplinary team to refine and apply advanced ICWE modeling tools and high-mechanical testing techniques suitable for heterogeneous deformation andfailure in these welds, perform advanced microstructure characterization and failure analysis, to gain fundamentalunderstanding of the microstructure-property relations of ferritic steels, stainless steels, nickel based super alloys anddissimilar welds among these material combinations. Generate research reports and peer-reviewed journal papers.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop experimental techniques to characterize interfacial phenomena associated with dissimilar metal joining

  • Develop and apply advanced ICWE modeling tools including machine learning based approach to analyzespecialized mechanical testing on high temperature creep and creep-fatigue properties of weld

  • Conduct microstructure characterization and mechanical property measurements using various equipment andsystems

  • Develop and apply analytical tools to analyze the experimental results (microstructure and properties) to obtainthe interfacial properties for joining process development

  • Responsible for presenting and reporting research results and publishing scientific results in peer-reviewedjournals in a timely manner

  • Work with others to develop research initiatives and proposals to address the materials joining research needs ofDOE and US industry

  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements

  • Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  • A PhD degree in Welding Engineering, Materials Science/Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or closelyrelated discipline

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience after PhD degree in research and development on high-temperaturematerials welded structures

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with microstructure and high-temperature mechanical properties of highly heterogenous welded structures

  • Extensive experience in modeling and characterizing microstructure, deformation, and failure.

  • Strong hands-on experience in operating materials joining equipment and mechanical testing of weld joints

  • Solid background on materials science and phase transformations of ferritic alloys, and high temperatureexperiment mechanics

  • Demonstrated working knowledge and practical background in application of digital image correlation (DIC) orother whole field strain experiment technical for high temperature strain measurement

  • Working knowledge of ThermoCal, Dictra, and/or phase field modeling tools for microstructure and phasetransformation modeling and simulation of ferrite alloys

  • Knowledge of neutron and high energy synchrotron experiment for material characterization.

  • An excellent record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teamsacross the laboratory

  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks withindeadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
