Research Intern - Winter Semester, Unpaid at Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation

Job Description:

Summary

The Research Intern will support the John F. Butzer Center for Research & Innovation (JFB-R&I) mission of conducting, communicating, and translating research and innovation that demonstrate the value of Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital's processes, devices, technologies, and services in support of the optimal care of patients.

The Research internship will be tailored to grow the intern's skills and help in the development of new skills. A sampling of responsibilities is listed below and is not inclusive of all possible tasks assigned to the intern.

Essential Intern Responsibilities


  1. Assist with data collection including phone/video call, in-person, or off-site interviews

  2. Maintain collected forms in project folders; physical as well as digital

  3. Explain studies to patients and family members, requests participation, and obtains informed consent

  4. Maintain regulatory requirements and documentation

  5. Attend meetings; takes minutes as assigned

Essential Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Education, and Training Requirements):


  1. Pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in neurosciences, nursing, psychology, engineering, social work, public health, or related field. Student should be junior or senior level.

  2. Familiarity with medical, engineering or health services research terminology and basic research/statistical methodology is preferred, as appropriate to the position.

  3. Ability to accurately review and enter project data

  4. Analytical ability is required to prepare reports, maintain data inventory, code, transcribe interviews, develop graphs, perform literature searches, negotiate systems in several hospitals and/or human service organizations, and identify concerns/responses of participants that require termination of interview or possible intervention.

  5. Strong interpersonal skills are needed to interact effectively with patients/family member dyads, physicians, other human service professionals and a variety of supervisors for various research projects.

  6. Proficient typing and administrative skills to transcribe data, prepare correspondence, and maintain files.

  7. Normal office/hospital/research laboratory environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.

  8. May involve travel to other hospital/research sites and possibly to participants' homes. Interviews/experiments may require flexible day, evening and/or weekend hours.

  9. Physical Demands: Able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (up to 1/3 of the time); to lift, carry, push, pull, up to 10 pounds occasionally; to sit for the majority of the time, but may involve brief periods of time involving walking or wheeling; to use keyboard frequently (1/3 to 2/3 of the time)

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement:

Work Schedule

15-40 hours per week for 10-15 week period. Actual hours and duration of internship will be determined at the time of position being awarded
