As a Tooling & Machine Design Engineering Co-Op, you will conduct feasibility studies, determining manpower, cost estimates, and developing engineering criteria to support business objectives. You will encounter many of the different areas Engineers cover at Herman Miller as you become an integral part of the Tooling & Machine Design Engineering Team.

Co-Ops at Herman Miller are required to participate in all three (full-time) work rotations (May 2022 - August 2022, January 2023 - April 2023, and September 2023 - December 2023). Your first rotation will take place during our 2022 Summer Intern Program, which includes housing options if your permanent address is not local to your assigned work location.

Inside the Job

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Applying engineering approaches to projects/assignments.

  • Assisting in the implementation of new or emerging engineering concepts and technologies.

  • Assisting with product launches, prototyping, and tool/process development.

  • Assisting with the design of tools, fixtures, machines, robotics applications, and automated cells.

  • Completing basic and broad-based assignments, using originality and ingenuity.

  • Participating in cross-functional project teams in a technical engineering role.

  • Supporting multiple projects in various phases, simultaneously.

  • Performing additional responsibilities as requested to achieve business objectives.

  • Reviewing processes and operations that involve fundamental engineering applications.

What You Bring

Needed skills and experience for this role include:


  • Mechanical aptitude

  • Basic knowledge/understanding of the use of hand tools and power tools

  • Basic knowledge of Solidworks, AutoCAD, 3D Printing, and any other designing tools

  • Basic Knowledge of Fabrication and Machining- preferred but not required.

  • Exposure to project management concepts may be essential for some assignments

  • Basic knowledge of Lean principles and application.

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving ability

  • Enrollment in and pursuit of a four-year Bachelor's degree in Product Design and Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering from an accredited college or university

  • Able to provide transcripts upon request.

  • You must have a GPA of at least 3.0 (within your program) to qualify for consideration into the Co-Op Program.

  • Authorization to work in the United States
