Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) seeks to fill an OPS Animal Care Assistant.

Performs routine duties associated with cage sanitation and preparation for reuse in a research setting including cage maintenance, preventive maintenance of equipment, monitoring equipment for proper function and maintaining sanitary conditions. Operates mechanical washers and ensures cage washing and related equipment are in proper working order. Operates autoclaves to sterilize or decontaminate caging and equipment. Assists in receiving and storing materials, food, and supplies. Transports animals, caging, and supplies between animal rooms and facilities. Maintains sanitary condition of cage wash facilities and other ancillary areas including corridors and storage rooms. Takes necessary precautions to adhere to OSHA standards, other applicable federal and state regulations, and LAR standard operating procedures when working with hazardous agents, animals, and power equipment.

Provides diligent and responsible animal care. Feeds and waters animals. Changes and clean cages. Sanitizes equipment and facilities. Records and reports animal abnormalities including altered eating, drinking, waste elimination, behavior, superficial lesions, and/or death. Assists with technical procedures including record keeping, animal identification, breeding, sexing, specimen collection, preparing diets, and euthanasia. Records and reports environmental abnormalities. Provides routine physical maintenance of assigned areas. Performs other duties as assigned.


High School diploma and one year of work experience

  • Valid driver's license

  • Must be able to perform physical tasks, such as standing, gripping, reaching, bending, and have ability to regularly lift up to 50 pounds


  • Experience working with animals or in research.

Pay Plan

This is an OPS/temporary Job.


Up to 21 hours per week to occur Monday - Friday between 8:00am and 5:00pm, as determined by candidate and supervisor.
