The Director of Data Science is an experienced data scientist who develops and deploys innovative and cutting-edge models that solve business problems. The Director will manage a team of data scientists and will manage the entirety of data science engagements from beginning to end - ideation with business partners to final system implementation. Projects will vary in nature, complexity, and duration creating a dynamic environment with ample opportunities to learn, influence decisions, and solve complex business challenges. This role is expected to help develop the teams' modeling practices and toolsets for model development and deployment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
25% - Responsible for the management of the data science team including establishing competency development plans. Establish work flow for the team. Create environment for team to grow and develop. Identify team members to participate on cross-functional departments. Attract and develop top talent and mentor junior team members across the entire Actuarial Services team.
20% - Lead preparation of modeling data, internal scientific publications, and other analysis. Conduct research and identify experts to develop robust understanding of the issue, available information, and best modeling approach. Oversee the building and management of new data tables that support data collection in the department, cross-channel data integration, data visualization, dashboards, predictive analytics, and data mining.
20% - Engage with business partners to understand problems/aspirations and develop innovative data science solutions that address business needs. Develop data science roadmap in accordance with needs of business partners.
20% - Manage the presentation and delivery of findings and make actionable business recommendations that influence decisions and/or customer satisfaction.
10% - Effectively communicate results in written, oral and presentation formats. Build effective relationships with business partners.
5% - Stay abreast of new modeling techniques.
Master's degree with 6 years of data science experience or Bachelor's degree with 10 years of data science experience (degree in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, or other quantitative field of study).
A minimum of two years of Insurance industry experience, professional liability insurance preferred.
Five years' previous management experience required.
Broad understanding of core statistical and modeling techniques with experience analyzing data and building models in a statistical programming language (e.g., SAS, R, Python, etc.).
Solid understanding of actuarial fundamentals is preferred.
Ability to quickly grasp new concepts and technologies and adapt to changes and demands in fast-paced, dynamic environment, including drawing conclusions and making decision from imperfect and disparate datasets.
Extensive experience solving analytical issues through quantitative approaches and machine learning methods as well as vast experience using advanced statistical methods, data mining techniques, and information retrieval.
Excellent analytical, strategic, project management, decision-making and presentation skills.
Experience analyzing and manipulating large, complex, high-dimensional data from numerous sources.
In addition to outstanding problem solving skills, must have superior written and verbal communication to communicate data to non-technical and non-actuarial business professionals.
