Position Overview

Primary resource to support the management of fuel and energy costs and coordination of all regional utility services. Act as liaison with all utility service providers including electric, natural gas, water, sewer, and any associated utility distribution and commodity services. Work with the regional businesses to assure accounts are managed to conform to the appropriate rate schedules, service requirements and energy efficient operations. Provide support to CRH’s management and procurement teams through the procurement of operating fuels, including on/off road diesel, recycled fuel oil, NG, propane, or other alternative fuels, as needed.  The Energy Manager is an active participant on, and is supported by the CRH Americas Energy Category Team, to drive standard practices and knowledge across product groups, divisions, and regions.

 

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)

Manage utility services, rates, billing, and programs




    • Responsible for administering fuel and energy supplier, transportation, and utility contracts. 

    • Assist in the negotiation of utility services and commodity contracts with third party suppliers.

    • Support the development and the execution of fuel and energy management category strategies within the regions.  Strategies include tracking key costs, forecasts, procurement approaches, and risk management. 

    • Monitor usage patterns and adjust utility service rate schedules and contracts to optimize operational costs.

    • Identify conjunctive billing opportunities and eliminate unnecessary accounts and services.






    • Eliminate late payment charges, deposits, sales tax payments and seek refunds and verify bills are calculated properly, with discrepancies reconciled/refunded.

    • Identify opportunities to innovate and manage demand.



Demand management and utility tariff-rate analysis / management


  • Work with operations to identify and implement operating procedures to manage demand and lower costs such as managing plant load factors or power factors, establishing a start/finish schedule of each plant avoiding unnecessary ratchet peak demand.

  • Identify and participate in EDR or special rate incentive programs.

  • Identify demand-side management or interruptible rate design programs.

  • Conduct primary versus secondary power analysis.

Energy-efficiency analysis and improvement


  • Conduct assessments and audits with operations and management to identify and prioritize plant energy efficiency improvements. Negotiate audit costs with outside engineering firms or equipment contractors. Participate in audits, improving knowledge of operations and efficiency issues.

  • Review all utility program rules and implement efficiency measures to drive long-term economic value. 

  • Negotiate all incentives from the utility programs available. Prepare outlines of findings and present recommendations to management. 

  • Direct responsibility for completion of requests for capital to implement utility improvement initiatives.

  • Responsible for project management, procurement and installation of equipment for approved measures.

  • Provide utility-related education to operations management and lead the development of efficiency awareness within the Division.

Qualifications

 

Education/Experience


  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or Certified Energy Manager (CEM) or similar certification preferred.

  • Five years of business, finance, purchasing, operations or related experience.

  • Project management experience is preferred.

  • Experience in the management of utilities in a manufacturing, construction and / or mining environment is desirable.

  • Must have ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical issues related to the utility industry.
