Job Description

POSITION INFORMATION

Summary/Objective

Responsible for credit quality and credit management of assigned loan portfolio; credit oversight of new loan business; credit approvals within delegated authority; credit underwriting guidance, and collaboration with relationship leadership on broader strategic goals, risk appetite, credit strategy, and credit quality goals. SCO is responsible for enabling loan growth and maintaining good credit quality.

Essential Functions

% of Time

Reviewing credit approval memoranda: Assess risk rating, accuracy of terms and conditions, risk/return, analyze adequacy of repayment sources, ensure that key risks are highlighted and ensure adherence to Underwriting/Regulatory Guidelines.

Meeting with Relationship Management and Credit Solutions to evaluate new loan opportunities and changes to existing loans: Assess whether opportunity makes strategic and economic sense for SVB, understand qualitative and quantitative factors, decide if risk is acceptable and identify areas for additional due diligence.

Monthly portfolio reviews with each assigned team: Review every loan relationship in my assigned portfolios, with emphasis on risk rating, performance/liquidity trends, and compliance with loan covenants and reporting requirements.

Coach relationship managers in underwriting, portfolio management, negotiation, and positioning of solutions. Develop expertise in assigned sector(s) to help guide coaching and mentoring.

10%

Internal Meetings with Credit Solutions, Loan Administration, Credit Administration, Audit/Legal/ Compliance and other functions groups.

15%

Lead or contribute to important SVB initiatives (lending strategy, product strategy, controls, process improvements, people development, etc) representing Loan Administration as expert.

Decisions

Approve new loans or changes to existing loans up to delegated threshold given risk level.

Approve minor changes to loans above these thresholds, or present request to the appropriate approver if material.

Pre-screen loan opportunities and potential modifications with the relationship team, so that the likelihood of approval is high prior to delivering a proposal to the client.

Recommendations

For loans or modifications that are outside of delegated approval authority, sponsor the request and present it to the Credit Risk Manager or to appropriate other approval bodies (2LOD, etc). .

Knowledge

Broad knowledge of credit underwriting and loan structuring, with particular emphasis on forms of debt relevant to a venture capital or private equity firm. Understanding of the venture capital and private equity industry and innovation economy.

Skills

Multi-tasking, ability to condense large amounts of information into key decision points, pattern recognition, ability to balance client satisfaction with credit risk management, ability to find a compromise among competing interests within the bank, display leadership through indirect management, ability to work independently.

Competencies

High level of working independently.

Required Education and Experience

10+ years' experience, including management of a lending team with demonstrated success in both sales and portfolio management.

The employee must have the ability to use a computer keyboard, mouse, calculator, copier/fax machine, scanner and telephone. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Employee must have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: reviewing and analyzing information; transcribing; and/or viewing a computer screen. Employee may be required to make quick decisions as to when to escalate or directly address a situation, as well as handle the stress of such situations. The work environment is indoors with a majority of time spent sitting at a desk.
