Manager Personalized Medicine at Nicklaus Children's Health System

Job Summary

Responsible for managing staff and operations of the Nicklaus Children's Biobank and Genomic Medicine. Ensures completion of the deliverables for the active projects and secures sustainability and continuity of the Biobank and Personalized Medicine initiatives through extramural funding. Serve as the principal or sub-investigator, leading, drafting, and executing research protocols and implementation projects. Leads programmatic development; work with internal or external collaborators and business partners growing translational research and personalized medicine implementation portfolio.  Leads Nicklaus Children's Biobank expansion by ensuring the inclusion of diverse populations with rare or chronic complex pediatric diseases. Responsible for developing, updating, and maintaining policies, procedures, guidelines, educational, and outreach materials and scientific publications for Biobank, Genomic Medicine, and translational research.


Job Specific Duties


  • Works as a member of a collaborative and interdisciplinary team to forward the objectives of the Personalized Medicine Initiative. 

  • Leads business development efforts and serves as a liaison for the Biobank and Personalized Medicine with other departments at Nicklaus Children’s. 

  • Oversees and trains staff, participants in recruitment, processing and shipment of biological samples, input and updates of all data and inventory management pertinent to the Biobank and Personalized Medicine.  

  • Monitors staff attendance, productivity, and key performance indicators.  

  • Responsible for administrative and management activities including hiring/termination, coaching, training, and performance evaluations. 

  • Ensures policies, SOPs, and protocols are aligned with relevant rules, regulations, quality standards, and good clinical and research practices. 

  • In collaboration with the senior leadership, develops and oversees Biobank and Translational Research budget.

  • Creates, implements, and reports on program effectiveness measures and metrics including scientific and technical reports. 

  • Develops and maintains a strong external network of national collaborators. 

  • Leads collaborative research, defines scope of work, evaluates feasibility, creates budgets, and reviews contracts and agreements. 

  • Creates, reviews, and executes research protocols and reports the results to internal and external collaborators. 

  • Leads the preparation of grants, manuscripts, presentations, abstracts, and reports for funding sources and publication. 

  • Participates in the Hospital and Research Institute committees as appointed or required. 

  • Develops educational programs, outreach, and marketing for community stakeholders. 

  • Creates and updates multimedia recruitment and educational materials. 

Minimum Job Requirements


  • PhD in Bioscience, DrPH, MD, DO, or equivalent scientific or clinical degree  

  • 2-4 years of experience writing peer-reviewed articles and presenting at national/international conferences

  • 5 years of research experience in healthcare or academic settings

  • At least 2 years of experience in supporting operations of a Biobank or laboratory working with human biospecimens, budgeting resources, collecting data, using laboratory information management systems (LIMS), sample processing, management, storage and retrieval

  • 2 years working with the hospital's pathology department and coordinating research efforts with the clinical research committees

  • 2 years of experience leading projects and coordinating research team efforts, creating protocols, policies, and procedures

  • 1 year of experience working with national/international health agencies and engaging with community-based health groups

  • At least 1 year of experience working and reporting on PI-initiated grant-funded translational research projects

  • Experience in writing grants and familiarity with extramural funding application process

  • Prior experience working with CAP and CLIA


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities


  • Fluent in English and Spanish preferred.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a clinical research team and provide supervision to technical laboratory personnel.

  • Highly organized skilled administrator.

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and coordinate cross-discipline research projects.

  • Ability to work in a diverse and multi-cultural environment with cultural sensitivity.

  • Skilled communicator with effective speaking and presentation skills.
